This is not the expert's review you are looking for. I 'm a novice photographer and still experimenting on techniques, appropriate shutter speeds, aperture adjustments etc etc. I own two Nikon D40, after taking under consideration what Ken Rockwell had to say, and I must say it was totally worth it. The D40 is simply amazing. Choosing the lens was hard..

The 18-55 is purely the choice to go if just want to take pictures for family,
occasions and whatever a normal person would photograph but with better equipment. As far as its zooming capabilities is a bit fair though.. this is where the 55-200 takes on and does the business.

You can't simply use the 55-200 as a normal-every day lens, since you cant focus on objects that are close to you. On the zooming perpective its very good, not giving you a binoculars vision but surely doing the trick quite well.

My basic regret is why i didn't combine the money for the two and get one 18-200 but since I own two D40 bodies this was the case for me.

So in conclusion:
- 18-55 is superb and can be used as an every-day lens.
- 55-200 is an excellent telephoto lens but I personally would like a bit more
than that.
Both are quick in auto-focus and VR won't make you leave the tripod at home (as some say) but it would save your delete button ..alot!

If you have the money go buy the 18-200 and be a double happy person! :)

I love thss lens. I did see an improvement in the clarity of my pictures with this new lens. I do like the fact that I can turn off the VR. I also like the feel of the lens better than the original Nikkor 18-55mm that came with my camera.

  Nikon 18-55mm VR Lens
Review created: 11/10/08

This Lens is great for low light levels and is better than the popular standard 50mm f/1.8 lens. Lately there is a popular notion that the older standard AF single focal length lens are better then the AF Zoom. This may be for the non-VR types but not the VR AF 18-55 Zoom. This lens, with the VR technology, enables sharp pictures at lower light levels than the standard lens which is a great advantage for ambiet light environments. The only advantage left for the fix focal length lens is the weight and that may never be overcome by the VR zoom.

One of the better Nikkor lenses
Review created: 10/11/08

I have three Nikkor DX G type lenses and this Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF VR Lens is the best of the three. It is sharper, produces more true to life color and the auto focus is faster. It is ultra light weight although I don't mind a heavier lens. I would rather it used larger than 52mm filters but I can live with it. Fred Martin

  Under rated!

I bought this lens as part of a D50 kit a couple of years ago, always planning to upgrade. But the more I learn about photography the more I learn to appreciate what it does. Basically, it takes very sharp images, from 18 to 55mm, at every aperture, in every part of the frame, and does it with minimal distortion.

It's light, made of plastic, looks and feels cheap, but works great. I'm still shopping for an upgrade but I can't anything with less distortion at the wide end for less than $1000. Not bad.

  Review of Nikkor 18-55mm Lens

This was purchased as a new product and was much cheaper than I could find at any retail store in my area. Sometimes purchasing such a item carries some risk, but in my case it was the best option.

I found this to be a good experience for myself as well as a cost savings.

It is small, light and very versitile. Great travel lens. Use on Nikon D50 for travel. This nikon lens is very cheap but performs great. I purchased this lens so I did not have to carry my Nikon 24-70mm lens and my Nikon D700 when we were at the beach.

The Nikon cameras and lenses take great, high quality pictures. Wanted to upgrade to the Vibration Reduction for even better pictures at slower speeds. Very pleased so far.

Nikon 18-55mm VR Lens For Nikon D40x Camera
Review created: 01/09/09(updated 01/09/09)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I like the speed at which the autofocus works. The lens utilizes a(SWM)Silent Wave Motor, built in the lens itself. The Nikon lens allows my camera to utilize the built in light next to the lens mount that I didn't realize was even there. We thought the light was an infra red light, but only works with orignal Nikon product lenses.
We bought the lens for the autofocus feature. We didn't realize the accuracy and speed at which the lens could acomplish this task even in the lowest of light conditions. We love the lens and would recommend that anyone wishing to purchase a 35mm Digital SLR with 10+ Megapixels clarity to purchase this lens for your Nikon Digital Camera.
The (VR) Vibration Reduction feature also allows for sharper images at lower shutter speeds without the use of a tripod.
A word of advice for chosing a seller is that you pick a seller with the greatest positive feedback rating and lowest price. Ebay allows users to view and comment on purchases. Watch an item for a while to get an idea of the price range to offer for a product you wish to purchase. And bid accordingly, never purchase an item unless you do your research first. Happy shopping and saving on Ebay.

Great lens. Works nicely for indoor stuff.

The best thing about this lens is it is a Nikkor.

Opens up to 18mm. Good quality - not great.

Nice lens, but does not work fully with Nikon D300
Review created: 12/20/08
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful lens that is supposed to allow for lower shooting speeds due to vibration reduction mechanics. Unfortunately, the Nikon website does not clearly note something highlighted in the manual for this lens: The vibration reduction option will NOT WORK if you have a Nikon camera with a button to turn on Auto Focus, even if you turn it on. They specifically mention that it will not work with the D300, the very camera purchased from the eBay seller (professional camera shop) at the same time as the camera. Therefore, consider this fact when considering this lens.

Good value for the paid price- you get what you pay for
Review created: 12/05/09(updated 12/05/09)

Nikon AF Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Lens performs well in the outdoor and good lighting setup. It is sharp, silent, and fast focusing and can deliver good images in outdoor and bright environment while the lens is not very useful in slightly low illumination condition, such as cloudy or indoor setup. The lens is somehow slow and images are slightly soft when the illumination is not ideal, for taking group outdoor picture of soccer team after a game in a cloudy/raining day as an example. Although VR provides good image stability, it does not really make much impact within this short depth of field range by 18-55mm. I only use this lens as "leisure-use" lens along with low-weight dSLR camera on easy family trip particularly in sunny days when I just want to grab a camera for some picture taking but don't want to carry too many gears to ruin the fun of family interaction.

  Great Lens
Review created: 12/04/09

This lens actually comes standard with the lens combos packages with many of the Nikon DSLRs, but with the added benefit of VR (stability) which helps against hand held shots taken in darker surroundings. The quality of my pictures are amazing. I bought my NIKON D50 without the lens kit, then paid $169 to get a 70-300 Nikkor Lens. This zoom lens was great, but only good for landscape shots and portraits from afar.

Overall, it beats my old Nikkor AF 28-80mm 3.3-5.6G hands down. My wife always complained that this old lens made people look fat. I will have to take this new lens on a trip and see if it solves that problem. With the ability to take pictures from only a few inches away, my macro shots are beautiful.

Now to purchase a step step up ring so I can use my old 58mm filters.

  Perfect all around lens.
Review created: 12/02/09
by:

The Nikon 18-55 AF-S DX VR f/3.5-5.6G Lens is a very versatile lens. I have it on my Nikon D80 and it is perfect for most things I shoot. Although it does not have the picture quality of my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens, it is a step up from the kit lens which does not sport the very helpful Vibration Reduction feature. Unlike some other big name companies, Nikon decided to put the VR system into their lenses instead of the camera itself, which in turn makes the individual lenses more expensive. I picked this lens up for ~$120 with shipping and you should not expect to pay any more than that. Overall, good study lens, great range and build well.

  What a great lens! VR=amazing
Review created: 11/19/09

I have used Nikon SLR's before, but I never knew much about the capabilities of these cameras and lenses! This was a gift for my girlfriend, and maybe it was a little bit for me too! :) I bought the VR version of this lens, which adds the Vibration Reduction feature! I was testing it out and I was amazed at how nice my pictures were turning out! Comparing my photos to ones without using the VR feature was like taking on and off your glasses! It adds so much clarity and precision to your shots, especially close ups! And this was just the 18-55mm lens! I will always buy the VR lenses from here on out for my Nikon! The only thing I regret was not getting the 18-200mm lens! But that will be in the works soon!! Then I will dream of the 70-300mm!! You are doing yourself a disservice buy not buying the VR lens!
