Typical Dickens
Review created: 09/24/09(updated 09/24/09)

This movie is typical Dickens, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. While it demonstrates a not unexpected Dickensian and Victorian sensibility, the plot does glorify self-determination, while denigrating self-absorption. The sadism of Mrs.Squeers is quite startling, though not irregular from people of that bent, and if some of Dickens point is to identify the niggardly and inhuman treatment of students in some of Victorian England's boarding schools--mistreatment, I might add with some venom, caused by a love of money that was a problem then and is an absolute society-wide brain tumor now--he effectively accomplishes it. At any rate, the film is an easy one to watch as a family. For those of a shallow mind who want mere didacticism, it is easily moralized into a lesson. For those who like a comment on social inequity and the profoundly troubling attitude of adults toward children during Dickens' period, this can be a vehicle for such discussion. A solidly good film, but not excellent, I recommend it without hesitation.
