Where It All Started

I remember buying this CD when it first came out. I was so broken up by Frusciante's leaving RHCP at the time and couldn't wait to hear what he had done as a "solo artist." At first I did not know what to think. I thought it was brilliant, but there was also a part of me that was somewhat disappointed in the record. I didn't really come to fully appreciate this record until I learned more about what was going on with his life at the time. Now, of course, it all makes perfect sense and the music means a lot more to me. In light of his other releases, this one is only memorable because of the bizarre nature of it. There are some very beautiful moments, some really innovative playing and recording techniques... and as a work of art, it's very poignant and honest. Raw. Again, I love this album, but I would not call it his best. (I think The Empyrean is his best so far, followed by Shadows Collide With People and Inside of Emptiness). But nevertheless, this album has probably inspired me more than almost any album ever has.
