Practical advice and encouragement to those of us who have difficult children. This Christian based book is and an excellant resource to refer to often. It helps us understand how to deal with and raise a NORMAL child that is trying to learn his/her place in the world.

The New Strong-Willed Child by James C. Dobson (2004)

Vry well written and most helpful if you have a child that has a mind of their own and has a hard time obeying rules.

James Dobson is an advocate of the Christian Family, and this book provides an excellent guide through the challenges of raising strong-willed (and other) children with spiritual values, in a world full of destructive influences. It gives parents the tool and confidence to meet the challenges of child-rearing. A must-read for new parents.

  Perfect Title

Excellent book with lots of good ideas on how to "tame" the strong will. The only thing I didn't like was he spent too much time at the first of the book talking about his dog. I want to go straight to the good stuff... But other wise, excellent book... Glad I made the purchase...

The title of the book is perfect, inside explains it al

The book is a gift for someone else. But I've read a little bit of it. What I liked about it in this the fact that he explains in full detail. Makes it easy to understand and follow. Didn't come across any thing that I dislike particularly. Decided to buy the book because I have heard so many great things about it.

My Strong Willed Child Is learning to respect
Review created: 10/16/09

This book is great. I am not a dictator in my house and I do not condone beatings and this book taught me about balance of power and punishment. Its a good read and has tons of great remedies in it. Your child may not fit into all catagories but if you are looking at this book to help then you already know you have a "Strong Willed Child". Make sure to read it through then put his words into use and I hope you get the results I have found from this information.

  VERY HELPFUL BOOK!!

This book written by James Dobson is a very great tool in helping parents know the best and most effective way to discipline their children especially the ones that are strong willed. James Dobson gives godly advice and insight in raising children in our immoral culture. It has really helped open my eyes to some of the discipline tactics that I have attempted in the past that has not worked and made me understand why they were not effective. i reccomend this book to any parent of a child from birth to 18 years of age.

  Good, Common Sense Advice
Review created: 07/01/08

You can't beat a classic! This book is straight-forward and practical. It is like a conversation with a wise old grandfather. I am so glad that there is still a parenting book around that isn't afraid to tell a parent to be the authority figure. I have always been unassertive and afraid to be in charge of my children. This book opened my eyes that I must take the God-appointed role of authority figure over my children. Allowing your children to do as they please and not intervening is wrong. You are entrusted with their lives and you must guide them to obey you so they will later be able to obey other authority figures as well as God. I know some believe Dr. Dobson as harsh and his advocation of spanking in situations where it is warranted is wrong. I'm not saying that alternatives to spanking never work, but in some children, it is the most effective form of discipline when used CORRECTLY. Dr. Dobson stresses that you don't just haul off and hit the kid. You must have clear boundaries set and if the child is repeatedly willfully disobedient, you explain that a spanking is the consequence of the behavior. Spanking is not to be an angry reaction to childish behavior. He makes that very clear. So, clear up all your misconceptions about Dr. Dobson and read the book!

In addition, I have tried the warm-fuzzy Christian parenting books like How to Really Love Your Child. I found it to be ineffective at our house. No matter how much I 'filled our strong-willed child's emotional tank', the negative behavior still continued. Maybe it works for some or I did not try it long enough. However, the effects of Dr. Dobson's methods are almost immediate. I felt empowered immediately while reading the book. While I'm still trying to overcome the desire to be my children's 'friend', I feel this book has set me on the correct path to effective parenting.

An excellent book that helps make parenting easier!
Review created: 03/04/08

I love getting a good Christian perspective on raising children. It is not a bunch of new age, find your inner child, you are your own god, clap trap that we typically hear today. Dr. Dobson's writing is easy and fun to read because he makes lots of light hearted fun about everyday situations that most parents of strong willed kids have to deal with. I highly recommend this book.

Did not like this book, or the disclipline techniques used. This book is
all about control, not love. The author talks about controlling his dog in
the 1st few chapters with a belt. Also uses hitting for compliance.
Couldn't even get thru the whole book.
