On NEW POP SUNDAY, Sponge continues with the pop rock formula that worked on the group's sophomore effort, WAX ECSTATIC. "My Lackluster Love" is a hummable singalong complete with a "la, la, la" chorus. "Pollyana" rocks a little harder, while the mid-tempo "Live Here Without You" features Vinnie Dombroski singing about the despair of a lost love. "1000 Times" contains an infectious guitar chord cast over a fast rock beat. The title track is a simple ditty about the singer getting intimate with his girlfriend on their favorite day of the week. "Planet Girls" is a danceable rocker, while the darker "Disconnected" heads in a grunge direction. NEW POP SUNDAY is the group's finest effort yet, and shows the band developing its craft. No experimenting here, just a straight-ahead rock album that will not disappoint.
