I really need this book for my classes at culinary school. If you're a student, or just someone who has a real passion for food, you need to pick up this book! The later additions are also a great buy as well, but they have most of the same information.

this book is everything the critics say it is. if you cook and do not own this book then you owe yourself a treat...i hear the 4th edition is even better. all manner of food definitions, cooking terms, etc. you ever wondered about when cooking is defined here. lots of great extra helps as well.

Every kitchen should come equipped with a copy of this book. It's my favorite gift for those who are becoming interested in food, preparation, and presentation. It's also great to have on hand as a reference when watching the Food Network - just what is a "jicama" or "samphire" and where would you find them in your supermarket? This book goes beyond definitions, with historical explanations and/or usage of items. BUY THIS BOOK!...for brides, grooms, new home owners, or old friends...

I love it and I use it all the time to reference things I see in a recipe or read in a cooking magazine! It covers absolutely everything you could ever want to know about food and cooking. I bought this one for a friend who shares my love of cooking.

Read about this out of print book in a side bar in either Saveur or Food and Wine and sought it out on Ebay. This is an excellent compendium of food terms and is also good reading. At the bare minimum for each term there is a paragraph about the term. Easy to use and I am glad that I bought this book. Good reading for the cooking enthusiast.

A great tool, A referance like no other!

Sharon Tyler Herbst, author of 17 books on food and drink, including “The Food Lover’s Companion,” a comprehensive encyclopedia of culinary terms and ingredients, died Friday, January 26, 2007 at her home in Bodega Bay, Calif. after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

This book is wonderful! It's the dictionary for the kitchen. Any term, phrase, kind of food, way to prepare it, where it's from, anything you need to know about food, it's in this book.
