I think that this is a good book, I give it 4/5. I feel it is a good book if one is a book learner. I feel that her second book under similar name is much better for the visual learner, this book gets very detailed on her studies of her observations. One can truly learn from her instruction in this book.

Very simply, this is a book that anyone and everyone should purchase if they have any interest in learning to draw portraits. Ms. Edwards has proven that everyone possesses the ability to draw realistically. Pick up a copy of this book and look and the before and after drawings. If that doesn't convince you that you too have the untrained ability to create awesome drawings...
Give Ms. Edwards' ideas a try. You will shortly realize the "truth" of her position as you work her fun-to-do exercises. Even it the assignments were not fun, the rapid progression of your drawing skills would make them well worthwhile. Obviously this book is not a artistic "magic bullet" but you will learn to draw with a realism that is almost photographic. Forget your preconceived notions about your drawing skill. I promise you a very happy surprise; you can draw.

THE definitive classic on tapping into the creative process behind drawing (and, beyond that, into any applied creative endeavor you may want to try!) I had a copy of the original that I wanted to replace, as it was falling apart and hadn't been used for years. This revised edition has additional "stuff" - including color and watercolor pencil instruction - that just add to the scope of the first book. Highly recommended, especially if you're like I am and open a book at a random page to see what it wants to tell you that day.

i really liked this book about drawing. before i drew faces like cartoons and now i can copy pictures from books quite good. i am very proud of the drawings i do now and i owe it all to this book. im waiting till i master my skill to show of the drawings to friends and family. my favorite part of the book the part where it says to draw upside down pictures which has helped me the most(you'll get what im saying when you read the book) its really really worth buying for 10bucks- you can spend this on a meal, why not on something that you will enjoy. when you draw you dont have anything else on your mind and that is a great feeling. maybe they could improved the book with more pictures, but they have good enough pictures anyway.

This book helped me loosen up my drawing skills that were rusty. As an accomplished artist who works often from photographs I needed to get back to drawing from life. This book helped me to do so. First I picked it up from the library but I found it to be a book I wanted to keep in my own library.

This newly revised version of the classic REALLY does show you a whole new way to get into drawing. It shows you why you can't draw--with reasons going back to childhood -- and gives you exercises and helps you make some basic tools to get you into "right brain" mode so you CAN do the kind of drawing you've always wanted to do but never thought you could.
As an engineer who could never do anything artistic, I've found this book invaluable in helping me draw far better than I ever could -- or even thought I could.
Highly recommended.

I needed to learn to draw, IMMEDIATELY! Several artists and art students recommended this book.
I went through the exercises and found that Dr. Edwards' theory works! Somehow, in the middle of an exercise, I started seeing things differently than before, and I could draw edges and shapes that I'd never been able to recognize until then.
There's still an awful lot to learn before I'm competent in drawing, but the breakthrough from this book has been a huge advance.
I strongly recommend this book!

Excellent training bookIf you're unsure of your drawing talent, this book is for you. It shows you how to think in the proper manner to draw things in still life. Many people who think they can't draw, just aren't seeing the world properly to draw it well. This book teaches you how to go about seeing things in the proper manner to be able to draw them. It stands to reason that if everyone can improve their handwriting, than everyone can improve their drawing skills & this book shows you how to do it. If you stick thru the book from front & back & perform all the excerises in it, you will see major improvement in your still life art.
