Album Notes
THE MUSTANG YEARS collects all of Fuller's recordings for the Mustang label along with the previously import-only live album CELEBRITY NIGHT AT P.J's, recorded at a December 1965 show in Hollywood, California.
The Bobby Fuller Four includes: Bobby Fuller (vocals); Randy Fuller, Jim Reese, Dalton Powell.
Producer: Bob Keane.
Compilation producer: Gary Tanenbaum.
Includes liner notes by Bill Holdship, Bryan Thomas, Dan Epstien and Don Waller.
Digitally remastered by Paul Tavenner, Gary Tanenbaum and Charlie Watts.
El Paso native Bobby Fuller and his group seemed to be destined for success when they moved to Los Angeles. Besides his charismatic good looks, Fuller penned songs that were melodically strong and rhythmically forceful. With a sound that owed a significant creative debt to another Texan, Buddy Holly, the Bobby Fuller Four enjoyed their greatest chart success with a song written by Sonny Curtis, (who was one of Holly's Crickets) "I Fought the Law," which ended up in the national Top 10. Fuller's career was cut short when he died at the age of 22 in the summer of 1966. Though his death was ruled a suicide by the L.A. Police, the event has been a hotly disputed topic of debate since.
The box set includes two discs of highly spirited hits, misses, and lost songs. A third disc contains a number of tracks that were recorded live. Throughout, the Bobby Fuller Four sound like the missing bridge between Buddy Holly and Creedence Clearwater Revival. While many others who gained greater popularity in that era may sound quaintly dated today, Bobby Fuller sounds just fine right now.
