The U87Ai is my standard. I can put it up in front of any voice or instrument and get a good track. Other mics may or may not work for various sources, but the U87 always gets me there. I really like the balance Neumann achieved with this model.
I have other mics that may sound better on one source or another, but you have to get familiar enough with them to know when they will work and when they won't. Having the U87 makes life a lot easier.
Other Neumanns I've had include the TLM 193 (too dark for most sources), and the TLM 127 (sounded bright, hard, brittle for most sources). They were both limited in how I could use them, and I sold them because they were rarely my best choice for any given source. If I only had a few mics, they would have been good enough, but in a field of many good mics, they were about mid-ground.

The Product Arrived very timely.
It was in exactly the condition that was specified - mint condition.
Correspondence was always pleasure - and the seller was always on top of things!
The seller went above and beyond what was necessary on his part when dealing with duty at the US/Canadian Border.
I would definitely purchase from this seller again if the opportunity ever arised.

A crystal clear mic...to a faultReview created: 03/23/09

) I've used this mic in several studios both as an engineer and producer. The mic is extremely crystal clear, to a fault! What I mean by that is it has an extremely flat response. It can make a very good singer be great...it can make an average singer sound bad. The price for the mic is exaggerated but we must thank the great marketing team at Neumann for that! Therefore, since you need to have one just simply for the sake of having one (the Studios' "right of passage")...buy it on eBay! Many folks who have it for the same reason and may be selling their studio gear offer it for a much better price than retail. I would say that if you're lucky enough to find an original Russian-made Oktava MK-312, you're better off with that mic for vocals unless the singer you're recording is more than in complete control of their voice. Certainly, the U87 is excellent on high-quality instruments...as in "there are none better".
