  Todd Rundgren CD Nearly Human
Review created: 01/02/08

I bought this for a gift for my father who is a huge Todd Rundgren fan. He didn't have this in a CD only a cassette. I love the CD. Case came cracked which really didn't bother me but felt that seller should package better to help prevent that during shipping. Especially since I was giving it away as a gift. Seller did offer to resend another one but figured the same thing would have happened.

  This Has Meaning

I'm so glad I found this because I missed having it in my collection. Apparently there's some friction between Todd and Warner which is a disgrace. No wonder he's appalled by the recording industry. I was at the 1991 Chicago Riviera Theatre performance where the live version of this album was recorded and had some folks along with me who were absolutely floored by the performance as was I. I remember saying to myself, this is Todd back on his game and it was plainly evident both in Chicago and on this CD. Everytime I hear " I Love My Life" all I think of is " if they were passing a plate, people would be putting money it" ..The same holds true each time I hear that song now on this CD. It's that believable as is the talent of this artist.

TR's Nearly Human stands the test of time!
Review created: 07/31/07

I attended TR's concert at the Roxy in Atlanta 6/07. He's still got it- so got home and realized I was missing some old TR and wanted to replace my lost favorite "Nearly Human" It wasn't easy to find - mostly found Japanese tour recordings of many Nearly Human songs.I wanted the original/found it and am not sorry -it still rocks! The first three tracks alone are worth the CD price. The social commentary in "Unloved Children" is still pertinent."Feel It" and "Hawking"still reach your inner depths and "I Love My Life" sums it up perfectly 18 years later. Not crazy about"Two Little Hitlers" but that's only 1 out of ten."Nearly Human" is up there w/TR's 'Wizard True Star","Something/Anything" and "Back to the Bars" Best of the Best TR.

  Nearly Perfect!

With a catalogue that spans over three decades, It's no surprise that Todd Rundgren has put out many excellent albums that went under the radar of most radio stations, music stores and the record-buying public. This collection of songs brings Todd's songwriting talent and soulful vocals together with an outstanding cast of musicians, background vocalists, and guest star Bobby Womack (on The Want Of A Nail). The fact that there was very little promotion by Warner Brothers didn't help sales, and this album found its way to cutout bins and bargain racks.

Nearly Human has so much to offer, from the R&B influence used in The Want Of A Nail to rockin' songs like Can't Stop Running and Unloved Children. Parallel Lines, a beautiful ballad recalling lost love that never comes together, was originally part of a score Todd wrote for the production of the play, Up Against It. The Waiting Game and Fidelity stand up with Todd's best ballads, and the passionate Hawking showcases Mr. Rundgren's amazing vocal abilities.

If you enjoy thoughtful songs written in a soulful pop vein, like Hall & Oates, this album is worth checking out. If you're looking for Todd's greatest hits (Hello It's Me, I Saw The Light, Bang The Drum All Day), stick with Rhino's The Best Of Todd Rundgren.
