You don't have to be a fan of the Silents to appreciate this film. Even kids and young adults who normally refuse to watch black and white (let alone silent) movies will be enthralled.
Keaton's famous deadpan and amazing choreographed stuntwork are in fine form here. The timing is perfectly paced and the action sequences prevent the movie from devolving into mere slapstick.
The plot involves the familiar (to Keaton fans) theme of an upper-crust idiot having to fend for himself. The rest is best watched, not described. Kathryn McGuire turns in a brave, and funny performance as Keaton's love interest.
The DVD includes two other, earlier, nautical comedies: "The Boat" and "The Love Nest." Neither reach the level of "The Navigator," and both have losses to the film. But they are still a fun to watch, and a great addition to the disc.
Though the plot and props aren't up to Keaton's classic "The General," this film is inventive and hilariously entertaining. The restored print is wonderfully crisp and deterioration is minimal. A worthwhile addition to anyone's DVD collection.
