Overall, worth watching, but slow in places
Review created: 03/18/09

The Book of Secrets was a good follow-up movie to the first movie, but left me a little disappointed in places. You first have to be able to sell the audience on the idea and then work to make it believable. This did not happen for me. Parts where very slow and the Father, Mother interaction thing was very distracting.

Kidnapping the Pres. was a little too far-fetched for even me.

I'll give this an average rating.

Just as good as National Treasure 1

I had been told that National Treasure 2 was not as good as the first movie but I found it just as good. I find it amusing that, in both movies, Nicolas Cage is able to figure out that clues in 30 seconds while other people have not been able to figure them out in hundreds of years.

Ben Gates is just not doing well at all:

His girlfriend broke up with him
He's living with his father

and....

Ben Gates' Great Grandfather, Thomas Gates, is just about to be nationally recognized as a hero when Mitch Wilkinson steps out and announces he has evidence that Thomas Gates was part of the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.

In order to clear his ancestor's name, Ben, his sidekick Riley, and Ben's father start to investigate an order of Southern militants. What they discover was that Queen Victoria supported the Southerner's cause and she was attempting to help them find a treasure to finance the war.

Naturally, there's a treasure involved--the famed City of Gold. In order to find this treasure, they must race against Mitch Wilkinson and kidnap the US President to get to the Presidential Book of Secrets, containing information about everything from the City of Gold to Area 51 and the Kennedy Assassination.

Along the way, Ben's ex-girlfriend, Abigail, and Mom, Dr. Em Appleton, are added to the treasure hunting crew.

In my opinion, "Book of Secrets" has exceeded the "National Treasure." The story's better, the ensemble cast is strongly refined, and both the jokes and action just keep coming. Everyone in the cast save for Ed Harris impressed me. I honestly wasn't sure whether Mitch Wilkinson was a mercenary or a misguided man trying to claim some fame for his own family.

And yes--there appears to be a good chance we will see more of Ben Gates' adventuring. This one sanctioned by the President himself. I'm looking forward to Film 3.

An added bonus was the Disney cartoon up front where Goofy gets a bigscreen TV. The story details an armchair quarterback's quest for the optimal viewing experience and how simple it is to set up a modern home theatre system. The jokes were so fast and furious I had tears in my eyes by the end and my stomach hurt from laughing. This cartoon is second only to my all-time favorite movie cartoon featuring the "Madagascar Penguins" that featured in front of "Wallace and Gromit--the Curse of the Were-Rabbit."

Sad to say they could have done better.

I really wanted to love this movie. But sadly it does not live up to part 1. The star(Cage) pretty much knows EVERYTHING and does not even waste time talking to his co-stars for info(really). How does 1 family have this many famous relitives and people still do respect the family? Also why does it always start with NO ONE believing Cage?

I never recieved the item and I am very upset with ebay because you warned me about the seller after I had already purchased the item and sent the payment. Now tell me what good did that do. I thought it was a good purchase but I was cheated out of my hard earned money.

  A great follow up movie.

I was impressed by this movie. I was worried that it would be hard to have a second movie about a treasure hunting group of people and still have the movie stay fresh.

However, the Gates clan is back again and they are still looking for lost/hidden treasure. Yet, this time they are doing it to clear the name of their ancestor who has been implicated in the assassination of President Lincoln. To clear their name, they must find the treasure.

The movie is a great formula of drama, action, glob trotting, and of course treasure. The show has a great villian and the interactions between Gates Jr & Sr and their wives is great. :)

The writers even set up National Treasure 3 by having Gates look into a page in the President's secret book. Gates, Look at page 47 for me and tell me what you think.

5/5
A fun family movie.

Another action packed, edge of your seat thrill ride!!

If you liked the first one, you will like this one! Another action packed Nicholas Cage thrill ride. This movie seemed a little more far fetched than the first one, just because you knew what to expect so they had to make it a little more fantastic than before. My biggest complaint about this movie is the way in which Nicolas Cage's character puts some of these "clues" together so easily. It's awfully amazing how he can take some fantastic clue and be able to follow it so easily.

I took my wife, and two boys (10 & 7) and we all had a wonderful time. Our 7 year old found a couple of areas 'scary' but it was more just the music and the threat that something bad could happen. All in all, it's a very family friendly movie that all the members of your family should enjoy.

  Edge of your seat comedy
Review created: 11/08/09

Wonderful movie. Edge of your seat action with enough comedy to keep it just right. Most sequels don't measure up to the original this one passes it.

Just as good as the first.

My husband and I both really liked National Treasure. We rented National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets and we both thought it was as good as the first movie. Yes, they do stretch believability but that is what movies are all about, leaving reality for a while. If all movies were believable, life would be pretty boring.

While you miss the big screen feature, it is still a fun movie to see and husband thought it better seeing it the second time than at the movies. He still thinks though the first National Treasure was a better movie, but is pleased he now has the sequel.

I'm not usually a fan of sequels, but.....
Review created: 07/17/09(updated 07/17/09)

this one did NOT disappoint. Nicholas Cage is awesome as always. I loved everything about this movie. We bought it because we saw it at a $1 cinema (actually more like $2 or $3 nowadays)and loved it. We decided to add it to our collection. Our children can even watch it which is always a plus. The language was very good and only a few parts were a little scary. Fantastic!!!

  Great action-packed movie!
Review created: 07/15/09

This movie has plenty of action and suspense. I like the fact that there is no profanity or graphic violence. The plot is farfetched like the first National Treasure movie, but my wife and I found it to be very entertaining. A great way to spend an evening is watching National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.

National Treasure 2 is an EXCELLENT MOVIE

Nicolas Cage, again at his very best. No one could have played this roll better!! That would be absolutely impossible!!! This movie is truly exciting, full of adventure with the edge of your seat action from start to finish. All of the actors play their roll so very well and so in tune to each other you think they are going to finish each other sentences. You could watch this movie just for that, to see how very skilled these actors are!! So well done!! I is unbelievable how they made this whole movie look so real, the movies sets the action, all so believable, if you did not know better you would believe it to be true. This truly is a must see for everyone.
