Industry Reviews
K-Gr 4 Another well-written, easy-to-read "True Book" filled with interesting facts and anecdotes. The first chapter discusses how the U.S. flag evolved over time to its present appearance. Subsequent chapters outline the major causes of the War of 1812 while introducing President Madison and his wife Dolley, emphasizing her brave actions during the burning of Washington, DC. The fierce conflict between the English navy and the U.S. Army for Fort McHenry is vividly communicated. The reason that Francis Scott Key was stuck on an English warship, his feelings after the battle, and his writing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" are explained simply but with strong national pride. The full-color reproductions of famous paintings portraying the people and events described are outstanding. A brief list for further reading, related Internet sites and organizations, and a simple glossary are included. Stephani Hutchinson, Pioneer Elementary School, Sunnyside, WA
