An Upbeat Crime Scene Lab

I just recently discovered NCIS. This hip, energetic, and often humorous look at the operations of the Navy equivalent of CSI far exceeds the droll look of the other crime lab programs. As usual the cast of characters makes all the difference. Abby, the Goth forensics expert who goes to church regularly is my favorite. Her energetic approach to unlocking the secrets leading to the capture of the murderer is a blast to watch. Just give her a 44 ounce caffeine loaded beverage and you'll see forensic miracles happen right in front of your eyes. And then there is Tony, the number two man in the team. He's nearing forty but hasn't let go of many of his amorous juvenile ways. At the same time right when he's becoming an irritant his movie trivia hobby provides the key clue to solving the crime. And for those who wonder whatever happened to Ilya from the Man from U.N.C.L.E., don't worry. He's working for NCIS as head ME now named Ducky (Dr. Mallord). He slices and dices his dead patients all the while talking to them as though they were enjoying a nice cup of tea together. And then there's Gibbs, the team leader. Married and divorced three times he still turns the heads of all the ladies. He has that amazing ability to make everyone insecure in his presence. He is internally motivated to find the killer. When the victim is a woman or a child, watch out. The memories of his wife and daughter's death have given him an unbelievable motivation to protect women and children everywhere.
The show also has the ability to make fun of itself. When describing Ducky as a sort of Ilya K. lookalike the other characters are seen wondering the significance of that statement. When Gibbs, masterfully played by Mark Harmon - a former standout College Quarterback in real life, picks up a football and throws a perfect spiral to a neighborhood teen, the Newbie team member has a perplexed look on his face as though the football might have significance in the life of Gibbs. Once again the show has just winked its eye at itself.
The USA Network regularly shows episodes of the show. I realized that I hadn't seen much of the early episodes so I turned to Ebay to find a DVD set of NCIS Season One. I quickly watched the sixteen episodes and shared the set with my grown kids.
