West Coast gangsta veteran MC Eiht proves his longevity in the rap game with an album that updates the G-funk formula for the new millennium. Similar to his contemporary DJ Quik, MC Eiht runs counter to current fashion with an album chock full of laid-back grooves and soulful music. The polished production featured on N' MY NEIGHBORHOOD is prototypical West Coast gangsta, with a subtlety absent from much of the genre; both musically and lyrically, MC Eiht's delivery is hard-edged but smooth. The album begins with the typically theatrical "Intro," a slice of 'hood audio verite that segues tightly into "Git Money." Things really work best when Eiht downplays the Gangsta-funk formula and explores mood and texture. The excellent "From Yo Hood 2 My Hood" uses a few spare elements, combining urban ambience, chords from a Rhodes piano, and a downtempo rhythm, a basic formula that runs throughout the album. The track "Till I Die" adds haunting, modulating, almost Gothic synth patterns, while "So Ruff" diverges most from the revisionist formula, recalling Timbaland's futurist R&B in its double-timed snares and bleepy synthesizer sound effects.
