BOOK: Myths of the Cherokee by James Mooney
I have some interest in the history & stories of the Cherokee people as my children are part Cherokee Indian. This book gives a good background on the history of the people from 1540-1900. There are 126 myths & Cherokee stories covered in the book, including sacred stories, animal myths, local legends, wonder stories, & historical traditions. The author gives some comparisons also of Cherokee myths as compared to the myths of others. Some of the myths & stories included are The Moon an the Thunders, The Origin of Strawberries, The Rabbit and the Tar Wolf, How the Deer Got His Horns, How the Redbird Got His Color, The Snake Boy, The Lost Cherokee, The Mother Bear's Song & many more. There are also 20 maps & illustrations in the book. This is a large book 608 pages with a treasure load of information. Makes a nice home schooling book for a study on American Indians. Enjoy your reading!
