The Mythology of Middle-Earth by Ruth S Noel
For the beginner delving into the basics of Tolkien's mythological influences, this book will be a good place to start.
The average reader will find it easy to understand and simply written. There is good coverage of the universal mythic themes.
However, it does not offer an in-depth analysis of Tolkien's use of myth and the more obscure texts that the author drew from.
More serious and advanced students will need to look further afield.
