Album Notes
After successful covers of Van Zandt songs like "If I Needed You" and "Pancho & Lefty" made it impossible for the reclusive songwriter to maintain a low profile, he re-entered the spotlight with a genial flourish via AT MY WINDOW. His first album of new songs in a decade is probably Van Zandt's weakest effort, but that's like defining the least impressive Picasso painting or Hitchcock movie; his worst is miles ahead of most folks' best. Most importantly it contains a couple of stone classics. The simple honky tonk lament "Blue Wind Blew" could have been a great lost Hank Williams cut, and the often-covered "Buckskin Stallion Blues" is the kind of bittersweet lost-love ballad in which Townes excels. Nashville heavies like Mickey Raphael (from Willie Nelson's band), Jack Clement and Mark O'Connor offer solid but never overwhelming support.
