Movie Description This double feature contains two erotically charged films from the U.K. and France.
Acclaimed director Pawel Pawlikowski's MY SUMMER OF LOVE is a dreamy, poetic ode to adolescent infatuation and the dangerous feelings it ignites. Mona (Natalie Press) lives a dull life in a small Yorkshire town until things are stirred up by her befriending of beautiful Tamsin (Emily Blunt). Though they are from different social classes, Mona and Tamsin make an immediate connection, wandering around the lush countryside and slowly realizing their attraction to one another, sparking a romance that is as unexpected as it is electrifying. This adaptation of Helen Cross's novel is a gem of a film, an intimate drama (boasting assured performances) that captures the burst of first love with remarkable clarity. Gorgeous photography by Ryszard Lenczewski helps to confirm Pawlikowski's status as one of world cinema's most engaging auteurs.
In François Ozon's interesting thriller, SWIMMING POOL, Charlotte Rampling plays Sarah Morton, a prim and proper British author who has written a successful series of mystery-crime novels. When her publisher (Charles Dance) suggests that a depressed Sarah use his idyllic vacation home in the south of France as a tranquil escape, Sarah reluctantly accepts. There, Sarah receives an unexpected and highly unwelcome visit from her publisher's bold, sexy, confrontational teenage daughter, Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). The two are instantly at odds with each other, as Julie drinks, smokes, and slinks around the pool topless. The story takes a turn for the bizarre as booze-clouded activities by the pool become dark and seedy. Rampling and Sagnier ignite the screen with static tension, giving the film a tangible electricity through their stunted conversations and resentful glances. Pensive camerawork provides moments of true visual comedy that only enhance the plot's intrigue, offering viewers an understated yet powerful narrative feat.
