Synopsis A young boy relates his adventures during the year he spends living alone in the Catskill Mountains including his struggle for survival, his dependence on nature, his animal friends, and his ultimate realization that he needs human companionship.
Tired of living in a cramped New York City apartment, teenaged Sam Gribley takes an ax, a penknife, a ball of cord, $40, and pieces of steel and flint with him to the Catskill Mountains where he attempts to live off the land. In order to survive in the wilderness, Sam must depend not only on his knowledge of nature but also on his own ingenuity and wits. He many be able to survive, but can Sam manage enjoy his life completely cut off from human contact?
