my name is earl - season one

The most original comedy since Arrested Development, My Name is Earl marked the launch of a lovable new loser. Earl Hickey (Jason Lee) sleeps all day and drinks all night. The pattern ends when he buys a "scratcher"--and wins $100,000. Seconds later, he's hit by a car and loses the ticket. While in the hospital, wife Joy (Emmy nominee Jaime Pressly) leaves him for Darnell the Crab Man (Eddie Steeples). Doped up on morphine, he's watching TV when Carson Daly says something about karma. Earl decides that's his problem: bad karma. He resolves to spend the rest of his life making up for all the harm he's ever done. In the pilot, Earl and brother Randy (Ethan Suplee) start by picking up litter around their motel (Joy got the trailer). While they're at it, Earl finds the lost ticket and collects his bounty. The plan is working! Along with comely maid Catalina (Nadine Velazquez), they set off to right more wrongs. Created by Greg Garcia and teamed with The Office, My Name is Earl put NBC back on the must-see comedy map. Unlike most sitcoms, it drops the studio audience in favor of flashbacks, freeze frames, first-person narration, and extensive So-Cal location work. A soundtrack heavy on blue collar favorites, like Lynyrd Skynyrd, completes the picture.
Throughout the season, Earl gives an old girlfriend self-respect ("Faked My Own Death"), plans his ex-wife's big day ("Joy's Wedding"), and makes up for the birthday he ruined ("Monkeys in Space"). First year guests include Brett Butler ("White Lie Christmas"), Juliette Lewis ("The Bounty Hunter"), and Emmy nominee Jon Favreau ("O Karma, Where Art Thou?"). Giovanni Ribisi and Beau Bridges also stop by as, respectively, Earl's pal Ralph and father Carl. Speaking of originality, "Dad's Car," which takes place during Mother's Day, features commentary from the mothers of Lee, Suplee, Garcia, and director Marc Buckland.

NBC's enormously popular sitcom MY NAME IS EARL stars Jason Lee as a reformed criminal, who sees the light when he loses a winning lottery ticket after getting hit by a car. He decides his bad luck can be chalked up to bad karma, and sets about making amends with everyone he has ever wronged. This very long list includes a former victim of Earl's schoolyard bullying, whom he helps to come out of the closet, and a one-legged girl from whom Earl once stole a car. Ethan Supplee (ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL) plays Earl's slow but good-hearted brother and sidekick, Randy, and Jaime Pressly (NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE) plays Earl's ex-wife, Joy. Guest stars on the show include Beau Bridges as Earl's father, as well as Giovanni Ribisi (LOST IN TRANSLATION).

  Karma is a funny thing.

This extremely funny show is about Earl Hickey (Jason Lee), a petty thief, scam artist, and all around jerk.

Here's how the story goes...

One day while buying "a pack of smokes, a couple Lotto scratchers, and a tallboy at 10:00 in the mornin'" from a local convenience store, he is overjoyed to discover that he is the winner of $100,000.00. So overjoyed, in fact, that he runs into the street for a celebratory dance and is promptly hit by a car. Just before he loses consciousness, he sees his "lucky" lotto ticket get swept away in a gust of wind.

While recovering in a hospital, Earl reflects on his life and wonders why it sucks. He married his wife Joy (Jaime Pressly) after their booze-soaked first date, and was too drunk to realize that she was six months pregnant at the time. They named the kid Dodge because she remembers that his daddy drove a truck. A few months later, Joy was pregnant again. Earl Jr. had a decidedly darker complexion than Earl Sr. {he also had a bushy afro that looked suspiciously like that of Darnell (Eddie Steeples), a waiter at the Crab Shack} but Earl loves the kid anyway. Earl is also saddled with a sweet but dumb younger brother, Randy (Ethan Suplee). When Joy brings him divorce papers while he's lying in the hospital bed, Earl tries to decide how to get his life back in order. He gets his answer from an unusual source: while channel surfing, he stumbles across Carson Daly discussing the idea of karma...what goes around comes around.

Earl decides that he must have lost his Lotto ticket because of this karma thing, so he sets out to correct all of the wrongs he committed over the years. He makes up a list ranging from littering to faking his death to break up with a girl. He and Randy move into a crummy motel where they befriend housekeeper Catalina (Nadine Velazquez) and get to work crossing things off of his list. When his winning lottery ticket literally comes flying back into his life, Earl realizes that he has finally found his purpose.

Each episode consists of at least one of the evil-doings being scratched off the haggard yellow notebook paper kept in his pocket. But unlike many comedic shows, "My Name Is Earl" has a very touching aspect and moral story to every episode. Earl is not only able to scratch off a task, but he learns & grows through this new found addiction. The good acts become contagious and soon those around him are experiencing the new found wealth of karma. Maybe if we all took some lessons from Earl we'd live a much happier and wholesome life, a life that teaches others, while at the same time learning for ourselves.

The cast is amazing. You couldn't ask for a better fit for Jason Lee or Jamie Presley. The acting is so familiar to the characters, it's as if everyone was born for the role. The Hickey brothers fit each other so perfectly that you can't help but love their state in society.

Some of the episodes contain audio tracks with the creators & some of the actors. The audio tracks are interesting and will entertain anyone who finds the show even slightly funny.

The DVD set also contains deleted scenes & a blooper reel. There is also a behind the scenes feature, but the best featurette is entitled "Bad Karma." This featurette is a hilarious outtake on what things would have been like if Carson Daily wasn't Earl's influence, but someone else was. The strictly DVD release of the featurette makes the DVD worth the purchase and at least a couple rentals.

My Name Isn't Earl, but I love it!

This is just great red neck humor. Along the lines of the Blue Collar humor. If you like a good belly laugh, while not all hung up on being politically correct, this is for you! Lighten up and laugh a little!
I chose to buy this because my family became fans of the show this year. We bought this because we just had to catch up on what we missed. We weren't disappointed.
My name is Earl does have a message, what goes around comes around. Nothing too deep but it's there. Karma! It's true, just watch and see!

What can I say?

MY NAME IS EARL is a funny TV show. Actually, I bought the first season DVD for my mom and dad. My family basically considers the first season of the tv show a good purchase. We find it fun and refreshing to watch. Maybe it won't appeal to everyone, but I recommend it.

My Name is Earl is, in my opinion the best TV show ever. Jason Lee portrays Earl Hickey who is all about Karma. You really need to see this show to understand. It is all about undoing the wrongs you have done and trying to live your life right.

My review of My Name is Earl
Review created: 05/01/09

Why did I buy this item? Well it goes back to my television watching habits. I generally don't watch television more than a minute or two a day. but I knew I liked the series My Name is Earl. I got three years behind on the episodes and started renting all the seasons at a local video store. BUT the very first disc was missing from their rentable collection. After watching three seasons in two weeks, I wanted to watch the first disc, but it wasn't available anywhere in the immediate proximity where I live, so I typed it in on ebay. And there it was. Rare or difficult to find items can be found on ebay, that's the main reason I like to shop here.
So, the disc itself? ....Do you like the show? if you do and you missed the first disc, then this is for you!
