Another John Ford classic: My Darling Clementine
Review created: 12/10/07(updated 12/11/07)

I bought My Darling Clementine on DVD because of the original version that is included in the package. It is touted as the version that director John Ford left with 20th Century Fox and the one that ws not doctored by Darrell F. Zanuck. The version that was finally released and that has been shown for close to 60 years is the Zanuck version which features Linda Darnell close-ups and somewhat intrusive pieces of music. Anyway, the original version is much the better movie in my opinion and I'm happy that I got a chance to see it after all these years. The original version is sparer and somehow more authentic seeming than the version that Fox released. Yes, My Darling Clementine is awash with historical inaccuracies but this is not a documentary even though it features historical characters. I think what John Ford intended was to give the viewer a feel of what Tombstone might've been like in the 1880s and what it would've been like to have been there and to have witnessed what occurred on those dusty streets. In that respect, My Darling Clementine succeeds like few movies ever have. A classic film well worth buying or renting.
