My Blueberry Nights
I bought this DVD because I wanted to see who Norah Jones was. I'm not sure this film helped. In the entire movie, I think we see the whole actress (singer) only once, for about two seconds. Everything else is a tight shot of her face--like so many poorly conceived movies these days: The camera is almost always too close. This technique seems to impress the movie-makers, but has anyone asked the audience? I find the technique oppressive. I want to see the scene, the surroundings, the person, the body language. All we get so much of the time is faces. Much of TV has been completely destroyed by this obsession with close-ups. The mention of Natalie Portman attracted me too, but she's barely there--only a short appearance late in the story. The story, by the way, was pretty much pointless. There are better ways to spend a couple of hours--lots of 'em.
