As the streams of daylight bombers flew out from sleepy villages in East Anglia and headed across Europe, vulnerable to fighters and flak, they were glad of the company of their `little friends? ? the P-51 Mustangs that escorted them to their targets. Meanwhile, the finest German fighter of WWII, the Fw 190, was airborne and on its way to take on the Mustangs and stop the bombers in their tracks.
