Album Notes Salako: Luke Barwell, David Langdale, Thomas Spencer, James Waudby, Marissa Claughan, Martin Jones, John Taylor. Recorded in New Yorkshire, England on November 1998 and March 1999. Imagine... You're sharing a picnic with friends. The sunshine is bathing the world in a hazy glow (or maybe you've had a little too much of that home-made elderberry wine). Anyway, you hear music--a perfect soundtrack. Fluttering flutes hover across chiming acoustic guitars. In the distance, an earnest string quartet pairs off with a cheap drum machine. Melodies leap out of unexpected places while soothing voices whisper in your ear. The hills are alive with the sound of MUSICALITY. Salako approached its second album like a science project, setting up equipment in odd locations (beaches, kitchens, churches), but the result is far from clinical. This is a warm, evocative record. MUSICALITY at first appears to be a grab-bag of jumbled ideas, but slowly unfolds into a magical sound picture. Sesame Street-style jauntiness abounds on "Devil's Feet Lullaby," whilst God makes an appearance on the contagious waltz "Look Left." Following in the footsteps of experimental pioneers like Brian Wilson, Salako is a sonic explorer sailing in uncharted waters.
