The Music Man (2003) with Matthew Broderick

This is an outstanding version of the Music Man. Both Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenowith are excellent in their portrayal of Professor Harold Hill and Marion the Librarian. I take my kids to see a lot of plays and this is one they haven't seen but the movie gives you the experience of seeing the play. Matthew Broderick is a natural song and dance man. He's come a long way since Ferris Bueller (although this is still one of my favorites). Buy this today! It will leave you feeling quite good and it is a terrific family movie.

A little better than the older version

The first time I watched this, I did not like it all too well... However, after watching it again, I liked it better than the version with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. Although Matthew Broderick was not as enthusiastic as Professor Hill, he was a fairly good singer and actor. I also liked the fact that the boy they used for Winthrop in this DVD had what seemed to be a natural lisp, so when he sang and talked it came out good. Hope this helps!

I love musicals and this one was particularly hard to get as it aired on TV. But this DVD is fabulous quality and beautiful to watch. And even though noone could ever top Robert Preston & Shirley Jones in the original movie....this was just as entertaining... almost like watching it from a different perspective but still wonderful. Kristen Chenowith won my heart in her portrayal as Glinda the Good in the Broadway musical "Wicked" and she shines just as brightly in this movie as well as Marion the Librarian. Do we even need to say anything about how talented Matthew Broderick is? Like Preston, it isn't his singing that makes him so believable as Professor Harold Hill, but his incredible acting and antics. All in all... a truly wonderful family movie. If you have never seen it...why not give "IOWA" a try?

Great remake of the old Music Man. Matthew Broderick does an excellent job. Listen carefully to the first "song," it's on the train. The cadence stays with you.

When I bought this DVD I thought it was the original, but it was a new version with different characters, etc. For not being the original classis the DVD was still good and we enjoyed watching.

  Multi-racial Cast

Although Matthew Broderick will never surpass Robert Preston's Harold Hill, one reason to choose this version is that there is a multi-racial cast. The chorus has children and adults of various ethnicities in it, which was the reason I chose to show it to my students. Kristin Chenowith is truly magnificient. My students also enjoyed recognizing Molly Shannon, Victor Garber, Matthew Broderick and the young boy who plays Winthrop.

A classic and must own title for me

This is Disney's rendition of the 1957 Broadway play. They did a fine job with casting and production. It captured the spirit that I loved from the broadway version and the first filming released in 1962. I might even say that the musical score was somewhat improved. I rarely see that and that was the number one reason why I had to own this classic.

I purchased this item at the end of August, 2008 and have yet to receive the item. I have contacted the seller twice. Once, was told he received my payment and the movie would be mailed out that week. The second time, I did not receive a reply to my e-mail. As of today, October 10, 2008, I have yet to receive the item. Would not buy from this person again.

I bought it because I'm in the cast of the Music Man for our Little Theatre this summer and I thought I'd look at a different presentation of the show. But, I should have listened to those reviewers who said it wasn't very good. I don't like Matthew Broderick and crew's interpretation - it wasn't half as fun as Robert Preston's show. As a matter of fact I only watched about 1/2 of it before turning it off. The remake doesn't have the sparkle or charm of the older version. Check it out at the library - don't buy it!

  One reason to see it.

There was no reason to make this movie. Matthew Broderick somehow wins awards for Broadway musicals without being able to sing. He is no Robert Preston. He sleepwalks through his role. Compare him in HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESSS...with Robert Morse and you will also note the same problem. He can be very engaging in comedies, but please stop the singing - it is putting me to sleep! Now, on the other hand, watch this for Kristen Chenowith. What charm and ohhhhhhh what a voice.
