Taking advantage of Danny Elfman's meteoric rise to success as a film composer, MCA Records compiled an admirable collection of the man's most memorable and bizarre film and television scores from the 1980s. Some of the 17 tracks on MUSIC FOR A DARKENED THEATRE are actually score excerpts (including PEE WEE's BIG ADVENTURE, BATMAN, and NIGHTBREED) other tracks are simply main themes (including THE SIMPSONS, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, and BACK TO SCHOOL). If anything, the compilation offers a glimpse into the twisted mind of one of cinema's most musically flamboyant, if not schizophrenic composers. Elfman's loose grasp on musical reality created a new dimension for film music, just as his band Oingo Boingo did for 1980s new wave pop.
