  PS2 Game: Samurai Legend Musashi

Join Musashi on his adventure to defeat the evil Gandrake and save the princess. This is the typical story line of Samurai Legend Musashi. The game play is solid with great vivid effects and anime style graphics. Musashi runs through the world he has been thrown into fighting off bad guys to gain experience, new items and of course be the hero of the day.

It's easy to learn the moves and gain new attacks. The bosses are not very difficult to defeat at all making the game a smooth ride for people that just want to progress through the story. The story line itself is pretty simple but that's okay because there are a lot of side items to do in the game as well including saving people other than the princess, running through the arena games and playing in a circus show. Plus you get to beat your baddies down with a kick-ass boat oar... who doesn't want to do that?

Downsides to this game is that normal baddies (not the bosses) reappear continuously (even after you've killed them off time and time again) which can get annoying after a while. Also, the voice acting in this game can make your ears bleed it's that bad. And lastly can we say where is the save point at? There are no save points once you start a mission leaving a person stuck playing for hours before until they complete one quest before they can save their progress.

If you're looking for a light care-free anime role-play game then I would definately recommend it. Everyone seems to give this game a bad rap and even though I agree it does have some down sides to it all in all it was a great game.

A Horrible Representation of Action RPG's

This is the typical RPG. You find your character transported to a far away land and asked to save the princess. After that you are also asked to fight the evil corportion of the land. The battle system goes as such, you go to the enemy press X 3 or 4 times and then move on. This is pretty fun at first but it grows old quickly and you find yourself clearing dungeons of variations of the same three enemies you fight in the first land. Now the game does have something going for it. That would be the beautiful graphics. The cell-shaded look does wonders for this game and it shows from the very beautifully animated special attacks.Unfortunatly the voice acting is awful and there is no way to turn it off unless you turn down the volume, which I did. The music in this game is good but with the great scores of music in other games this one did not match up. If you are desperate for a action RPG there are plenty of other good action RPGs on the market (aka Kingdom Hearts). If you really want this game after this then you should know that you can probobly expect around 30 hours or so from this game. This game had lots of promise but with the boring battle system and terrible story you would be well advised to stear clear of this game.

  Musashi: Samurai Legend (PS2)
Review created: 10/19/09

To begin, this game is great. I remember playing it with my brothers when I was young and I decided to get it with my purchase of the PS3. My PlayStation does in fact have backward compatibility, so I am able to enjoy it without digging through boxes to find my old PS2, which has served me well. I have not disliked a game made by SquareEnix in any of its earlier forms (Square, SquareSoft, etc.), from Super Mario RPG for the Super Nintendo to Musashi to the new Kingdom Hearts (Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days).

What reminded me of this game was its excellent music. When I visited my brother at college, he was in his dorm room with his iTunes playing a familiar melody. And I asked him what it was, and he told me it was "The Village of the Sacred Beast". I was in awe, and immediately got him to save the music to a flash drive. Anyway, now I can visit the Anthedon at anytime as I travel the globe.

The reason why I love this game is its unique storyline, original graphics, and most of all its amazing gameplay. You learn new abilities as you excel through the game and encounter more enemies. You have the ability to literally cut robots in half. And most importantly, you save the princesses to unlock new swords and defeat Gandrake.

Always and forever, I rate this game a 5 out of 5 in all of its exciting aspects, and recommend it to anyone with a eye for great games.

Got a couple hours to spare?
Review created: 04/02/09

If you're looking for an in-depth thought-provoker, you definitely have my permission to stop reading these reviews right now. However, if you have some free time or are looking for a game that's "just fun to play through," Musashi gets two thumbs up and 5 gold star stickers for that.

Admittedly traditional as far as concept goes, I found myself appreciating the game more because of its slight departures from the norm. Yeah, you've got your standard five-part plot-line going, involves swords and maidens, and who wants to bet the sword/maiden thing is element-based? Basically, if you've played your fair share of videogames over the years, you'll see this one coming a mile away--for the most part. At times, as I've said, Musashi is definitely a departure from your traditional five-step-PS2-product-with-a-couple-side-quests-here-and-there.

My personal favorite things about the game are 1) the graphics and 2) the characters. First off, since Musashi was advertised especially for its manga imitation (reminded me of Sly Cooper, on a more juvenile note), it's good to see that the visuals are surely easy to admire. (Personally, I always say go for the cartoon graphics, seeing as even after a decade, as long as you colored it right, no one will be cringing as they give old-school games a run-through on their backward-compatible Playstation6.) Secondly, the characters are fantastic: funny, interesting, unique, and well-scripted, somebody in the think tank is a good writer and it shows. Even you are bound to fall in love with Musashi--just like everybody else.

As far as operation goes, Musashi is not difficult to play. My only complaint set-up-wise is the fact that there is literally only ONE stationary save-point in the entire game. The overworld map is kind of confusing at first, but the learning curve is steep, and since Musashi is generally mostly a button-masher (I found that pressing "O" x 4 can easily become the leading cause of carpal tunnel syndrome in the U.S. and Japan) it's good to know things like: the controls aren't confusing or complicated, the camera angles are easy to manipulate, and most if not all obstacles can be avoided by simply running around. However, I will not say that Musashi is a game you can sit down to play straight through. It is a little challenging but the challenge is definitely fun.

My absolute favorite aspect of the game? Duplicating. That is, Musashi is a samurai in training and can learn new attacks by watching enemies make their moves. Really neat stuff.

Bottom line: good game. I'd recommend it to just about anyone.

  Not bad at all

Musashi is back! Finally!! And although his new adventure is somewhat of a letdown, it still should please fans.

Musashi is summoned by Princess Mycella to destroy Gandrake and his evil "corporation". But the princess is kidnapped(this happens many times), so you must save her, collect seven swords with the help of the maidens(?), and save the city of Anthedon.

The game itself is very simple and actually quite easy. The game never gets really hard or gets confusing. Its very straight and easy to follow. And thats one of the things that makes this game fun.

Althought the gameplay is rather fun, it gets really repetitive after awhile. You use the same combo over and over again, and sometimes a special move (depending on what sword you have). And you seem to carry people a lot. It seems that none of the maidens can walk, though sometimes I think they're faking it.

The voice acting is pretty bad. So bad, infact, that its actually pretty funny. The dialogue is goofy as well. And the musical score is pretty nice. Its nothing to boast about, but it mixes well with the game.

There's really no extra content in this game. You might want to come back to it after you've beaten it, but most likely not. Its fun while it lasts though.

8.5 Presentation
Clean, easy to use menus are a plus, and the locations are well made. Very colorful.
9.0 Graphics
Very good cell shading. Character models look fantastic, and the effects are cool. A bit of slowdown, too, when a lot is onscreen.
8.1 Sound
Voice acting is crappy but its also quite humorous. The good soundtrack fits the game well.
6.4 Gameplay
Incredibly repetitive and lacking in moves, but somewhat fun. Carrying people gets annoying after awhile.
6.0 Lasting Appeal
No good extras and not much to come back to, exept for big Musashi fans.
7.9 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)
