Movie Description
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle dedicated THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES to his medical mentor, Dr. Joseph Bell, writing "It is to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes." Dr. Bell, who taught medicine at the University of Edinburgh, had a remarkable ability to deduce information about people he observed, and also worked with the Edinburgh police on forensic medicine. Using these historical facts as a jumping-off point, the PBS miniseries MURDER ROOMS: THE DARK BEGINNINGS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES imagines a scenario in which Dr. Bell (Ian Richardson) solves crimes with the young Arthur Conan Doyle (Robin Laing) playing the role of sidekick. Together, the two delve into the seedy underbelly of Edinburgh and uncover a sinister killer.

    I didn't know what to expect when I rented this DVD. It was fascinating! We are watching how the famous Sherlock Holmes came to be written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from the beginning. It is not as you imagined.....at least not in this movie! In the story you will meet the real Mr. Holmes, who was in turn, Dr. Joseph Bell, a surgical professor at the University of Edinburgh Medical School and Doyle, a medical student and the real life model for Dr. Watson. Ian Richardson is just perfect in the role of "Holmes" and Doyle(Charles Edwards) is of course superb as the real Dr. Watson. Doyle was a clerk for Dr. Bell who was considered very eccentric, and a "wizard" at detecting. It kept me guessing who the murderer was all along and I was very much surprised at the end! Excellent twist.....top notch story.
