Publisher's Note
Multimedia Business Cases contains two interactive strategy cases on CD-ROM that instructors can tailor to fit their course. A CD-ROM allows huge amounts and, also, different types of information about a firm to be stored together in an attractive format in a single, readily accessible place. This increased information allows students to get a broader appreciation of a firm, its history and the impact of current conditions in order to consider how they might be assessed along with the implications for firm strategies. As a result, in comparison to the usual text case, the CD-ROM format presents students with more information about strategic issues and allows them to consider more choices even as they also become more aware that they are probably also overlooking issues. Finally, the CD-ROM format makes the case come alive. Steinway & Sons. This firm is the world’s leading manufacturer of concert grand pianos. This CD-ROM allows you to explore three general issues: (1) what did Steinway & Sons do in the past that allowed it to achieve and then maintain its current high status? (2) What current strategic issues face the firm? And (3), given the sources of the firm’s past success and the current competitive environment, what strategic options are currently open to the firm? Starbucks Corporation. The educational purpose of the CD-ROM case is to discuss Starbucks’ approach to coffee retailing in the US and to highlight its key sources of competitive advantage vis-à-vis its competitors. At the end of the case, the students are introduced to material that discusses Starbucks’ entry into Japan and are asked to recommend changes, if any, in the approach used by Starbucks to enter Japan.
