Mr. Holland's Opus (DVD, 1999)

Mr. Holland's Opus is, in my opinion, one of the best movies ever made. My husband and I were thrilled when we found it on DVD. Mr. Holland is the typical reluctant hero, a musician who becomes a teacher so he can spend all the leisure time he's sure to have composing a symphony. Until he starts to teach, he has no idea that teachers really don't have all that much leisure time, or that this is where his real talents lie. He may be a good musician and an even better composer, but he's one heck of a good teacher. An opus is a musical composition that is numbered to show the order of a composer's works. In this case, the works are students whose lives were forever touched and often changed by Mr. Holland during his 30-year teaching career. Richard Dreyfuss turns in an outstanding performance as Mr. Holland, but you'll enjoy the wonderful supporting cast as well. Keep the Kleenex handy ... this one is a tear-jerker! It's also a movie you'll want to see again and again, so you'll probably want to buy yourself a copy.

We live for the DVD in several stores and then we tried ebay it was cheaper and more convenient sideline. You could buy in the store I like shopping on eBay they always back up their products are released they will work with you thank you Don Flory

This movie is the best teacher movie I have ever seen. Dreyfuss does a superb job playing the part of a new teacher who learns to love his job by connecting to his students and making a lasting impression on their lives. A must see!

I decided to buy Mr. Holland's Opus, because none of our DVD Rental store carried it. It is a teaching tool that I use in my Foundations of Education Course. I liked the fact that this movie was sent in mint condition and I know that my students will enjoy this movie as much as I have.

this movie has always been my fav. a good movie for any music lover out there. it gives u a different outlook on our education system

I bought this DVD to replace an aging VHS copy. As a retired teacher, I consider this movie to be a staple in my video collection.

I love this movie, especially the ending. The music was very good. It makes you realize that the good things you do in your life does affect & inspire the people that come into your life.

This is a really nice, inspiring movie. I think anyone would enjoy watching it. Richard Dreyfus delivers a great performance.

I have seen this DVD 8 times since I purchased it. What a great movie!!!! I am always looking for musical to watch, and this is one of my better choices.

This is a classic movie. It tells the story of the stuggle a man has with a deaf son and his struggle to be a music teacher in a school where music is considered as a "bird" class. His struggles are not far from our own in trying to raise children with difficulties, being a good father/husband, and trying to make a difference at his work. I bought the movie because every time I see it on TV it reminds me of the frailty of life and its struggles.It brings you back into focus.

THe movie is a great tribute to parenting as well as teachers and the role they play in young lives.

Excellent movie! Teachers have the opportunity to make a huge impact on their students. So much so they can literally change the future of that student. I believe an appreciation for music and the arts brings about a broader vision for those who have experienced it in their lives. There's also a societal pattern here. Music/art/drama will always be cut before sports. That's poor decision making on the part of the powers that be. One may enjoy "watching" sports in their latter years but they certainly can't participate. Quite the contrary with the arts...you can experience and be a part of them as long as you live. Mr. Holland touched the lives of the entire community and as was shown by the last scenes of the movie, he was much appreciated for his contribution.

This movie shows how a person realizes how important an impact teachers have on the lives of the kids they teach if they choose too. It also shows a father that a disablility doesn't mean you need to be protected or your life can't be just a wonderful & full as anyone's. A disability is only as disabling as you allow it to be. I recommend seeing this movie to anyone & everyone that has a heart.

Awesome movie for the music lover. It'll make you laugh and cry. We bought it because this is one of those movies you can watch over and over. How the movie spans over time and touches different issues is great, but it all comes back to Mr. Holland's love for music.

Mr Holland is a composer turned Music teacher and puts his own desires of composing on the back burner. He teaches Driver's Ed. in the summer to earn extra money. He gets involved and really cares about his students. He loves them and they love him. the ending made me cry. I really loved this movie. You can laugh at times too. Great buy.

I saw this movie some years back and fell in love with it. It's got a good cast (Richard Dreyfus is wonderful) and a good story line. I did own the DVD at one time, but sold it. I decided now was the time to get it again. And I still love it.

I had this movie on VHS, bought 2 DVDs to replace it. I work at WA State School for the Deaf and had the children featured in this movie in my various groups. I love this movie...it is my all time favorite. It is so true to life how deaf children react and learn. And I live in Vancouver, WA, across the river from Portland OR where the movie was filmed. My favorite movie in all the world!

I have always loved this movie but not sure why. I know that it's great to watch this man go through his life and then had to give up his dream which he finally finished. It always makes me cry. Would recommend it.

I love this movie because it takes you through different eras of history! This movie could be used in the classroom as well as for great entertainment! It is defintely a four star movie!!!
