This parable featuring two mice named Sniff and Scurry and two people named Hem and Haw attempts to address the subject of change and characterize the pros and cons of different approaches to change. Sound simple ? It is. This could be a kid’s book written in 15 point font and still not make 15 pages. How and why the author managed to generate enough verbiage to fill an entire book, let alone make a fortune as a bestseller, is beyond me. Seriously, this is kindergarten 101 stuff. Things change. You can react or not react. You can react slowly or quickly. You can be flexible or inflexible. You can embrace change or fear and avoid change. Are you bored reading this review ? Think how bored you will be reading the book.

Why would you ever buy this book ? There are plane rides that are too short to get really drunk on. There are conversations with your mother-in-law that could potentially be avoided. Maybe youre actually dealing with a major change in your life, aren’t sure how to deal with it, and need a framework to think about your options. These are all good reasons to buy the book and given the money ($5) and time (1h 25m) you’ll need to invest to read the book, it seems like a small price to pay. My big take away from this book is that I need to change professions and become a self-help writer recycling childhood life lessons in the form of parables that sit in the business section of the bookstore.

If It Works for Mice Then Its Good Enough For Me
Review created: 06/20/06

A great little story using mice instead of people to show what happens to those who fear change and what happens to those who face change head on. This is a must read, no matter what your profession. We all need to know how to handle change. I think Cheese was a great metaphor for money, love or whatever it is that you are trying to hold on to in life. I have learned to relax more about my cheese and make some postive changes to ensure there will always be enough cheese to go around. If it works for mice then it can work for the rest of us!

This is a quick read and is easy to get through. That is reason enought to buy a self help book these days. It will not change over time so feel good about buying a used copy.

Do not let the cheesy title sway you- this is a story with a great message to all middle managers- change with the flow of business or starve. Don't worry- the writer delivers his message with alot more tact we have. WE love it on audio!

  Not so cheesy after all

A few years back, I was gifted with this little book. My employer provided a copy for every employee to read before a company-wide meeting. On the surface, this book seems overly simplistic and can be read in under an hour. However, the deeper meanings of adapting to changes, how you handle them and what change means in a life become clear once you put the book down and demand a second read.

This is truly a book for anyone going through any and all changes.

  Who Moved My Cheese?
Review created: 10/05/05

This is a great little parable about change, and responses to it. In the story of 2 mice whose cheese has suddenly been moved, we see aspects of ourselves and/or our organizations that adapt to change well, and those traits of the human psyche that hinder us from "finding new cheese". This book is written in a simple, child's story format, but it speaks to us on many levels, motivating the reader to see "the writing on the wall" and respond to it. The author follows up the story with a narrative of a conversation among friends who have just read the book, giving further insight into the dimensions of its application. Can be read in 2 hours. Should be read frequently.

This has been the most informative book that I have read in a long time. I have had some issues in my life and now with the reading of this book, I have found several answers. I highly recommend this book to be read by others and they will find solutions within the book.
I decided to buy this book through other friends that suggested to get it and I will probably read it again.

Excellent reading. Serves as a reminder of how people can view one object, situation, or communication so differently from one another based entirely on their own experiences to life.

  I Related To This

I most definately related to this book. From the first chapter I knew I was going to learn something from this book. I think this is very informative and can show people that change isn't something to be afraid of. Change can be something to look forward to and teach others and learn from others just as well.
We can't sit back and think that things are going to go back to the way they were or we will be left behind. In this day and age, being left behind is not where you want to be.
I think I realized that I am the mouse that runs ahead and tries to find the something new. I try to drag the unwilling with me. I think change is something that makes us grow and bloom.
Go forth and blossom!!

Don't let the size or length of this book fool you. It gets right to the point. The short time it took to read and comprehend was worth it.

I read this book and thought it was excellent because you actually feel like you are one of the mice in the book and I use the saying God closes a door behind you but he always opens a window. In the story the same saying is thought of you try to avoid the old cheese and you look for the newer cheese. In other words you close your past and look towards the future for a better life. I wish people would get the same idea out of this book as I did. thank you. The reason I had to buy this book was for a report in my class for college and there was nothing that I disliked about this book. I thought the book was excellent and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about themselves.

I was working for a BIG rent to own company when my boss told me I had to read this book. Everyone in the company had to read it because the presidnet of the company thought it would make us all better employees. Well I read it and boy was he right. I did become a better employee, for a different compnay. I had that job for a few years and my boss kept passing me up for promotion. I was making a good paycheck every week and had good health care. This book made me realize that I should not settle and feel content with my current life.
So a month later I took a different job and in less than a yr I was promoted. BUY THIS BOOK!!

A woman that used this book managed me at work. All I can say is that it was de-moralizing and insulting to be "taught" these principles like they were some new and radical idea. My entire department was treated like children and talked down to. Is this really the dumbing down of the corporate structure? Talk down to the people that work for you because they're really stupid and have no clue? Read to them from what is the equivalent of a children’s book? And what’s worse, to be reduced to and compared to mice? Ohhh Gawd! Give me break. This book is pure trash and made my life miserable for months until the manager moved on to another position.

WHO MOVED MY CHEESE? BY SPENCER JOHNSON(1998)

Excellent, easy to read. I have used this book several times and loaned it out because it is the kind of book that needs to be shared. I am in management and teach adults. Change is inevitable and this book categorizes the 4 personality types in a funny and engaging way. I was recently at a company conference and one of my colleagues asked me about the book. I told him I would get my copy back and forward it on to him with the agreement that he share with the other folks in our domain. Of course, when I asked my friend for my book to pass it on, she had already loaned it out to another of her friends. That is why I purchased this copy, it is meant to share and is basic and valuable information that everyone should take a look at. It takes less than an hour to read it. I read an enormous amount about training and continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, 6 Sigma...etc and must say that this small little book dwarfs all of the other literature ten times its' size.

  Excellent Motivational Reading

I am a teacher and I have used this book several times with my high school students. It is a great way for students to learn that books often have deeper meanings. It is also a motivational book that shows that we have resources that most of us never use to the fullest, like the ability to reason and problem solve as well as to strive to do our best. I have seen on the internet that Johnson has written similar books for younger readers although I have not read them.

Who Moved My Cheese? A book to make you think
Review created: 09/07/06
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is a quick read with a great story line. I found that I was intrigued and fascinated by the lives of the individual characters and found myself comparing them to people I know and attitudes that I have. Though the story could come off as a "and the moral to the story is" kind of a book, I found that everything that was done and said by the characters was pertinent to the storyline and made the book applicable to my life.
Each character portrays a different aspect of personality - from the Type A go-getter to the obstinent & unchangeable. Each character; Sniff and Scurry the mice and Hem and Haw the little people, has a distinct thought process and as they address the tragedy of the cheese being gone, they show their own flaws and strengths.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is going through changes in their life. As you read it, you'll find that each character's perspective and be seen in each of us at some time or other. If you're just looking for a good story and not particularly interested in soul searching, this book has that ability also.

Spencer Johnson Ate the Cheese, So to Speak

This book came out just in time when the school district I work for went through some big changes with administration, class sizes, and technology requirements for teachers and report cards. Johnson writes in a fun and pointed way that makes this book a very quick and worthwhile book. If you have some changes coming up and just the thought if change makes your skin crawl, then "Who Moved My Cheese" is for you!

One of the best things about this book is it can be read in less than an hour, but it is time well spent. The ideas expressed in the book are thought provoking and causes the reader to view how they really feel and deal with "change" then challenges them to rise up and take command of their future. The writing is not preachy and is easily absorbed. Give it a try...

This book was a required reading for a course I took. I finished it quite quickly and thought it was fairly enjoyable to read. It has many more pictures and much more filler/empty space than you'd expect. However, the book is valuable. I am not sure why some were disappointed, since it certainly wasn't the least bit painful or boring to read. I find myself thinking about the book's message still, after having read it two years ago. It's a quick read that you'll enjoy.

This short book makes an impact. It is a short fast read but can change your thought patterns quickly. We all can get stuck in a rut but we have to be aware that life is everchanging and changing directions is not only acceptable--it is a must. The principles can be related to business, family and home, school, as well as life in general. It also makes a great gift for graduates.

This is a excellent book that talks about change and how we may react to change. It gives an example of positive reaction to change and it gives an example of deciding to do things the same old way, even though we see that the old way is not working. It is book that will both enlighten you as well as a thought provoking book. It is written in a way that is easy to follow and easy to understand. I read a friends copy of this book and just had to have a copy of my own.
