The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle époque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

Reviews Review created: 04/03/07 by: Marvelous movie, lots of singing, dancing, romance, humor. Great fun and you have to watch it again to get all the things you missed the first time. If you go for a 3rd or 4th watch, yes, you will see even more. The 2 main characters match so well it's almost like a true story AND the quaint paintings in the sky bring the feel of the era to life with the totally updated rocked out music with old world charm. This is a very interesting film with an interesting consept; Take a 1952 Oscar winner for best Picture, Throw everything out but the name (script and premis and all) Keep the Main character but change him from a sad old drunk to a wimsical merry elf, make him an insignificant suporting character and add a butt load of pop music--- Sounds awful, but your Wrong... This is one of the best films ever, just watch it and prove yourself wrong!! Review ID: 10000000001416229 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
