The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle époque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

Who knew Ewan Mcgregor had a phenomenal voice until this movie or that Nicole Kidman could command the screen with something other than her beautiful eyes and long legs. This movie had great music, a phenomenal plot with many twists and turns, and a soundtrack that combined elements and songs in such a way that was entertaining and humorous. The costumes and cinematography will keep your mind going well past the drop of the curtain and the last time the words are uttered--the only thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return Review ID: 10000000000019755 Was this review helpful? The music is not only beautiful but is so cleverly woven together throughout the story. Humor, tragedy, even a singing moon and, above all, LOVE. Who could ask for more in a film? Well, we do get more with the amazing Nicole Kidman and quite impressive Ewan McGregor. I've been told that you either love or hate this movie; no in between. Without question, I Love This Movie! He mixes contemporary music in a by-gone era and blends them together like peanut butter and jelly. The bold colors and vivid scenes with great actors such as Ewen McGregor and Nicole Kidman to name a few were outstanding!! The dancing is terrific, the sets are amazing, the color so vivid.
