I have worked in the cellular industry for a long time and seen phone come and go. Motorola is usually at the cutting edge of phones and the V3 RAZR phone is no exception. I will give a short list of Pros and Cons of the phone and then expound a little more on then for those that care to get into more detail.

Pros:

+ Design
+ Structure (a solid frame)
+ Size
+ Battery Life
+ Keypad
+ Sound Quality
+ Customizability
+ Bluetooth
+ Messaging Software

Neutrals:

~ Speakerphone
~ Side Buttons
~ Software (can be slow, can be fast, can work great, can fail)

Cons:

- Vibration - hard to feel even in a tight pocket (could be due to size)
- Camera (easy to use, but only VGA (640x480 res))
- Sound Loudness (hard to hear in noisy places)
- Hinge (hard to open with one hand, same to close)
- Price

Pros -

The phone is solid. It is made out of the same material the Apple Powerbook G4 is made from, anodized aluminum. It is also the sleekest phone of the market coming in at 89 x 53 x 13.9 mm. It also is extremely light at 95 grams!

The battery life is pretty standard for phone coming out today with a 750 mAh Li-Ion battery that has maximum talk and standby times of 3.0 and 200 hours respectively under optimal conditions.

The keypad stays true to the design of the phone and is user friendly. I like the feel and design myself but I could foresee problems if your color blind (silver) or if your visually impaired.

The sound is fantastic for such a small phone. It was this one quality that I was most worried about. Everything worked perfectly when it came to incoming and outgoing calls. The only Con here was the speaker phone which will be discussed a little more below.

Customizability is incredible ... almost to the point that it might be a tad bit overwhelming if you don’t take the time to figure out how everything works. I still feel this is a Pro though as I can’t expect too many people would get this phone and not want to take the time to learn all the features. Everything can be customized but I do recommend you set a side more than just an evening to learn it all!

Bluetooth is now becoming more of a standard feature but I am sure glad to see it on this phone. It was a good decision on the part of Motorola and only adds to its futuristic style. Along with this the messaging feature is about par with the Motorola operating software and really doesn’t need any improvements.

I should also mention that this is a Quad band phone so for a world traveler (like me) this was a HUGE selling point!

Neutrals:

The speaker phone was nothing to write home about. It worked ... but that’s about all you could say for it. More often than not I would just end up turning it off and talking into the phone. If you have Bluetooth set up you shouldn’t really need to use it all that often and it didn’t work against the phone ... it just wasn’t the best it could be.

If you have used the V551 and similar models Motorola seems to be trying new uses for the side buttons ... but I have only found them more distracting than beneficial. One thing that irks me is that its quite temperamental when it comes to volume control and making the phone go silent.

Along with this there were no upgrades to the OS from previous models. While on par with what you would expect for most phones I thought there would be improvements here.

Cons:

Are pretty self explanatory but they should be taken into consideration before buying!

Motorola V3 - Super Sleek. Great Phone - still Motorola
Review created: 09/26/05
144 of 171 people found this review helpful.

Tech geeks refer to the hottest equipment and products as 'sexy' - well there isn't a sexier phone on the market. Its super slim, super light, and screams for attention when in public... its only a half inch thick!!

Better yet, it's a solid phone. There are plenty of gadgets that look great and have the sex-appeal, but don't deliver on the goods and functionality.

Pros:
*Sex appeal
*The phone has Bluetooth technology - a must have for any new phone
*A digital camera with a decent 4 x digital zoom and quick exposure controls.
*It has built in speakerphone - major plus.
*Also displays mpeg videos.
*Battery life is solid for a feature rich phone.

Cons:
*New media phones should either come with plenty of memory and storage capability - or the ability to insert a memory card. The V3 only delivers 5mb of memory - making it different to add MP3s, tons of photos, etc.
*Motorola's interface is a user preference - some love it, some don't. I find it a bit tricky.

Summary: If you like Motorola, this is the best phone on the market and eBay has it at such great prices that you really cant pass it up!

Note: The T-Mobile and Cingular versions are basically identical - cost and carrier are the differences

Very convenient in every day usage

Summing up, we can say the following: the model is very convenient in every day usage. It is flat and you can wear it everywhere you want. The phone always attracted attention, though some people didn’t even recognize a phone in this device. Motorola succeed in producing a nice phone of the fashion class which will become popular very soon (I am sure that it will be in Russia).

Motorola V3 Razor IS IT FOR YOu?
Review created: 01/10/06
by:
10 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I love this phone. Its thin, its light, its feature-full, and does its primary job better than my previous phone – the XDA II. I do wish synching would’ve worked better on my PC just so I could have tested that more and I do wish I had an easy to get to favorites contact list. But other than that, it is hard to find fault with this phone. The battery life seems good. Reception is great. The UI is great in most areas. The LCD screen on both the inside and outside is fantastic. And knowing that I can take this phone anywhere in the world is pretty nice too. All that said, you know you’re paying for the look of the phone and its size. Just like an iPod Mini. But just as an iPod Mini was worth it for my wife, the Razr is worth it for me.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here is an update to the Motorola Review after spending a full 6 weeks with the phone now. Since the review went up I’ve had all sorts of questions about the phone about features I didn’t even know existed. Thanks to those questions I’ve spent a bit more time in those areas and have now been able to provide a bit more info. My happiness with this phone still stands and I’m truly ecstatic about using it to the point that I’m seriously considering forwarding my business land line to it. But a few problems have cropped up that may affect others usage of the phone. Here they are:

First, the phone is capable of handling GIF wallpapers like many other phones, but unlike some other phones it cannot animate GIF89 pictures. Second, the small LCD panel used when the phone is closed lights up for only 10 seconds or so and cannot be set to stay on indefinitely or for longer. You can press the smart button for the LCD to light up again, but some people seem to not care for that. Finally – and this one I do consider a bit problematic – the Inbox application does not let me set a mail server for it to retrieve mail from. I can go into the settings and set every single other field in the Inbox settings, but any change I make whatsoever in the “Receiving Mail Server” field just kicks me back to the Messages menu. I do not know if this is unique to my UK targeted phone or if Cingular customers will see the same thing.

  Highly overrated

I've had this phone for a year now and should have stuck with a samsung phone.
The V3 speaker is awful, it crackles and is only clear in a total silent place. I appreciate opening my phone to a Calendar display -but its not possible with this phone. I like having to view my last received calls, this phone only displays the LAST 10! Samsung phones display 30 , new models probably more. Your fingers are constantly thrown to select buttons on both LEFT and RIGHT sides which is very difficult when you're driving, and most people are when thy're talking. This phones battery lasts less than 2hrs and that is only if display is kept at 20 Seconds or else it lasts one hour. I do not consider Motorola phones to be any good , they're highly overrated.

  Cell Phone Sales Rep

I work for a wireless phone company and we deal in sales with the Motorola Razr. I have been in the industry for more than 4 years. In my time that I have sold this device more customers have had problems with this phone than any other phone on the market. They have been recalled for problems with the screen going out and with dropping calls, and powering itself off. They were recalled and then redistributed and this phone continues to be a constant problem. I would not recommend this phone to anyone who wants a device they plan to keep for a while. The track record on this phone has been awful.

Motorola RAZR V3c incl, Pink version (Verizon Wireless)
Review created: 03/28/06
by:
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This review is for the Motorola V3c and the Motorola V3c PINK both for the Verizon Wireless network. This phone packs VCAST, Get It Now, a built in 1.3 megapixel digital camera, camcorder with MPEG4 video playback, and Bluetooth wireless technology, it’s the ultimate in high speed EVDO, and high tech. With the precision-cut keypad, minimalist styling and metal finish, the V3 looks just as beautiful as it performs.

This is an excellent looking phone. The main difference between the two models is that the PINK model is well… pink. Surprised I know. It has a lot of bells and whistles, but it does the job and does it well. The Keypad is well laid out and has large etched buttons; those worried about fat fingering numbers will welcome this. Another stand out feature of this phone is the Intenna. Basically the antenna is built into the case nothing extending out. The plus side is that the phone looks and feels great. The trade off is that you lose about a half bar of signal strength. Another downside is that with these first generation models, Motorola decided to take away the ability to add additional memory by eliminating the transflash port, those into the media player thing will disappointed. It’s a sleek and thin phone, great primary or backup phone if you lost your main phone or it was stolen.

Bottom line: the most solid phone I've seen
Review created: 03/13/06

8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I've had a lot of phones in my life and this is BY FAR - the most solid, reliable phone I've ever had. I've dropped it a few times, which with a plastic phone - would've scratched it for good. This does not have a SCRATCH on it. It's as flawless as it was the day I got it (about a year ago?). The hinge is just as tight as it was when I got it too.

The software, you're probably familiar with - it's the same as a V400/V500, etc.. the difference with this phone is reallly it's construction. And it is just super, super solid.

  Good Phone
Review created: 01/23/06
by:
7 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Comming from Nokia I would have to say this is by far one of my favorite phones,
a little bit of a pain to work on - once you disassemble it, alot of components need to be replaced so that is a downside and costly to the person who needs it repaired.
The overall size is great and the LCD is large, menu navigation is easy but does lag sometimes beacuse of the RAM. I did find Bluetooth to be a bit of a pain, there is no option to turn it on/off only find me, but with all the BT virus's going around I guess it makes sense. I also found the keys on the side of LCD a pain, that is if you have a leather case and grab the phone you hit the buttons and change the profile with the annoying beep.

Battery Life is not bad about 2-3 days and usb mini charger is great hook it up to your computer and you may charge it. Earpiece/Microphone/Speaker volume +5dBm which is great. Quad band phone so reception is quite good with four independant bandpass filters. I found the Camera to be a bit sensitive to light so don't expect to be getting clear pictures.

The sub display has a nice feature to display you wallpaper.

Also when you change your seem files and edit and erase all default tones and pictures you have over 7 megs of space, you can also change your sub display text to anything you like via motokit.

Overall I was very impressed with the phone but not the price.
And repair is a killer what ever you do don't break the hindge or LCD it will cost you.

Cheers!

We wanted to buy this phone from cell swap and the sent an email stating they sold out and would not process the payment. Luckily I felt the need to contact my bank and place a stop payment on the sale. They had the nerve to hit my account twice for a phone they said they couldn't sell. Do not use them they are crooks.

  Moto Razr V3
Review created: 03/27/06
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I bought this phone from an eBay seller last July 2005. At the time very few people had it, and it was wonderful, and made me feel...well special. I was able to do some mods, and SEEM changes, and had the volume on all levels increase, the phone memory size increase, and the VIDEO recorder which it did not come with - enabled.

Now everyone and their mother can get this phone for $50.00 on a 3 year plan (only in hideous black, or pink though).

I don't like the bastardization of this phone so that everyone can have it. And I especially don't like the version upgrades such as the V3c - a larger camera 1.5Mp component & MP3 player, and 3Vi - 1.23 Mp camera with 8x digital zoom. The phone was not even 3 months old before a "better" version came along in the form of the V3x with 128 memory and a 2Mp camera.

Overall a good phone that Motorola should have got right the first time around.

  Motorola V3 Razor
Review created: 11/19/06(updated 11/27/06)
by:
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this phone thinking it was going to be the best phone I would ever have. Well it is not. The design is great and I cannot tell when it is in my pocket. The color choice is great; pink, black, grey, silver, and dolce and cabbana gold, I bought the black one. The phone works fine as long as you do the following. You have to turn your phone off and on at least once everyday and take the battery off and clean it and the chip behind the battery. If you do not do anything else for your sake buy a screen cover. If you do not buy a screen cover it will get dusty and then only way to fix that is to buy a special tool set off of ebay to take the screen off, even then your model Razor might have springs and then your in trouble. Also, the internet is not impressive, very dull.

The Razrs' Key Features:

-External dimensions: 13.9 x 55 x 98 millimeters
-Weight: 95 grams
-External color display
-Picture caller ID
-Nickel-plated copper-alloy chemically-etched keypad
-Internal display: 2.2 inch 176 x 220 pixel 64K color TFT display
-External display: 96x80 pixels 4k color CSTN CLI
-EL keypad illumination panel
-Internal quad-band antenna
-Integrated VGA camera with 4x zoom
-Integrated Class 1 Bluetooth® wireless technology
-22kHz polyphonic speaker with MP3 ringer support
-MPEG4 video Playback
-3D Graphics Engine
-Java™ MIDP 2.0\
-Dedicated Messaging & Browser key

Alright,

I bought a Motorola V3 Razor, pink cell phone. I used to have one, that I could use with another cell-phone provider, cingular. But I didn't know that you had to buy one that work with your current provider, the new one I bought the pink razor motorola v3 razor, is for T-mobile customers/provider.
So make sure that the razor cell phone you buy can be used with your cell phone provider.

We have 2 RAZR's in our house! The battery life is excellent, as is the reception, sound quality, picture quality and ease of use. I like the fact that you can customize your RAZR with new skins, firmware updates, funlights, enhanced video recording and better camera capabilities.

The phone is easy to use, a great size, and is one of our favorites. I would recommend this phone to anyone.

great sylish design but overated and being oversold...
Review created: 05/07/06
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Not since the StarTac, has Motorola made such a splash in cellular circles. Yes, you can thank Motorola for inventing the concept of the original flip phone! But the new Razr V3 has done it again, creating the i want it vibe. The Razr is not the holy grail of cell phones, but it certainly is a cut above the rest. First and fore-most, the Razr is thin and light. No question this is THE pocket-able phone. Its sleek look has become almost a fashion statement, akin to the apple iPod. It has a nicely sized color display that is clear and comfortable to read. The keys are large enough for even the thick-fingered among us, and have a good feel. The display and keyboards are well back lighted for nighttime use with a soothing blue-green light, similar to Indiglow, which is not glaring or an obnoxious color. The aircraft aluminum accents are a nice hi-tech looking touch. The phone is wider than the average phone so you actually have something to hold on to, although others might find its width unusual. Fortunately for v3, beauty is not only skin deep. Motorola has always maintained an edge with their hardware technology and that has migrated into this phone as well. The sound clarity and quality is outstanding. The noise cancellation algorithm is superb. Ever notice when someone is driving and talking on their cell phone with a window open – you hear the wind and road noise? This phone does an excellent job of dramatically reducing that, to your callers, while you are talking and driving. This noise cancellation is also outstanding when using the speakerphone feature. Your calls are loud and very clear, and in my experience with using it – my callers said they didn’t even know they were on a speakerphone.
The phonebook feature is well laid out and easy to navigate and program. The phone also offers a voice-dialing feature that allows you to program items in your phonebook to dial by voice command. If you take your time to program this carefully, you will be rewarded with a very convenient feature that saves you time. The voice recognition works quite well for me.
Customize-able ring tones, mp3, custom wallpapers and screen savers. These features are common in nearly all of the color display phones available today – so I won’t spend a lot of time describing what is now almost standard. This phone does also play short videos.
The 4X zoom camera is a nice convenience and takes a reasonable picture, although it is not one of the best I have seen when compared to other phones. Arguably, I have seen better camera phones then the RAZR.

JAVA phone apps. This will be the buzz-phrase over the next few years. Who has the next great app? Who’s phone can run it? Many of the newer phones today run on JAVA-based programming. The RAZR is no exception. You can add other JAVA apps downloaded from Motorola, SUN Micro, or even private individuals on the Internet. I have seen applications from Fertility cycle trackers, to bartender drink mix guides. The more useful applications included limited mapping and mobile weather. None-the-less this phone, like some, allows you to download and execute the applications right on cell phone. So overall the razor is a really good phone if you want to be a part of the in crowd, it definitely wil turn heads, but I do believe it is a bit overated and oversold. Like I said the camera could be better and today alot of other phones like the samsung a900 do everything the razor does and alot more! so it depends what you need

  Great phone all-around

I have previously used phones from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Ericsson. None of them came close to the feature set, convenience and ease of use of the V3. Phone entries are more complicated than they need to be but that is because this feature is over-engineered for the average user. I like that I can add multiple phone numbers to one record (for home, work, mobile numbers, etc.) yet each shows up as an individual item on the dialing list with a small icon indicating which location the number is for. I also like the ability to do a quick check of my various e-mail accounts, though this functionality is rudimentary compared to a Blackberry or Treo.

But this phone is kinda sensitive, I was in the gym in the spinning room and only with a drop of water in the front screen the whole phone collapse in that instant, thanks god I had the insurance program and I was able to change it for a new one.

If what you need is an all weather phone, this one may not be the right one.
