  The Motorola T720 / T720i is a Solid Phone & Choice
Review created: 10/11/05

The Motorola T720 series (depends on the carrier) is like many Motorola phones - revolutionary. The T720 / T720i was really the first uber-popular phone to do much of what is now common - text message, internet browse, color / animated screen, voice recognition, good ring tones, etc etc. But like the startac - once everyone else caught up, the T720 / T720i quickly became antiquated if you will. Just a couple years later, the phone appears a tad bulky and doesn't have some of the hippest features (ie an internal camera - though there an attachment camera). They are available at great prices on eBay - so if price is a factor for you, this is a winner. But here are my pros and cons:

pros:
* Completely customizable - cases, anetennas, etc. The T720 / T720i can be personalized unlike any other phone. This is a sweet plus!
* Great prices available on eBay
* All of the necessary phone capabilities
* Motorola's classic interface

cons:
* Major Con: If you talk enough, the clamshell / flip-phone will break! The hinge is very weak and twice gave out on me. Now I didn't treat it overly well, but be warned!
* A tad bulky by today's measures
* Collects lint farely well

In general - its no longer the hippest phone. But the T720 / T720i is a certainly capable.

NOT A FAN OF MOTOROLA BUT MY HAT IS OFF TO THE T720
Review created: 12/30/07

When this phone first came out I had to have it. I am not a fan of motorola but I am very impressed with the T720. It has a sleek design that gets attention. It also has great signal quality. It is very comfortable to hold in your hands; not bulky like other flip phones. I recently purchased my second T720 because it has quality that other lighter weight phones have. If you are in the market for an inexpensive, expensive looking, good quality phone this is the phone for you.

Cannot recommend this phone at this point....

Well, like others have said, this phones actual features and so on aren't
bad at all, such as voice activated dialing, etc. HOWEVER - this phone has
2 well known major problems that forces me to not recommend it, after having used it for about half a year.
The charging system this phone uses is obsolete, Motorola dumped it fast for different technology. The adapter does not connect to the phone properly
it can be jarred loose very easily and stop the charging process, I have done this before simply by shutting my car door. I've had to sit in my car before for 15 minutes playing around with the adapter unplugging it and plugging it in to get get it to connect properly and start the charging process. Sometimes the only way I can get it to charge is by shutting my phone off and charging it that way. Other times it will appear the phone is charging correctly, only to come back to it 4 hours later, unplug it, and find out I still only have one bar of power left. Simply awful charging port that like I said Motorola got rid of along time ago, I have even had cell phone reps inside stores for my own carrier admit to me that it is junk.
To top it off the reception is terrible sometimes, conversations can break up on and off rapidly so you might hear part of a sentence but not enough of it to understand what the person was trying to say. I know its not my carrier either because the phone I had before this one gave me no reception problems.
All in all I would say avoid this phone, if you want to get a Motorola get one of the different models that came out after this one, one that uses a better designed port for charging.

  OK but not great!
Review created: 06/26/06

My Motorola T720 was an ok phone but it was not really great in any specific way. Good parts are that it is a solid phone. Does not appear cheap and flimpsy. The buttons are easy useable and the features are also easy to use. Reception was also not bad. Things I didn't like are how long a battery charge lasted (but I may have needed a new battery) and the charger for the Motorola itself is a pain - very flimpsy. Calls are sort of quiet and it is not as clear as I expect a cell phone to be. Also, I dropped it once and the screen cracked. I dropped my previous candy bar style phones many times and it didn't face them! I will not get another Motorola or Flip phone but that's just me, someone else may love them!

I am totally upset about my purchase of the Motorola T720. I used it for less than two weeks and the hinge broke which made it non working. The 7 day warranty had expired so I am stuck with no phone and out $41.00. This has turned me sour about using ebay to purchase items.

The two best features of this phone are; 1. the outside screen lets you know the party calling, and also has the phone status on it.2. the best feature this phone has is the "Voice Dial". This feature saves haveing to look for a number to dial, you just say the name and it dials the number.

Great phone if your looking for a great value on a flip phone. This phone has a nice big color screen and large light-up buttons. There is a reason why everyone once owned this phone in the past.

I went on line to find a phone that wasn't as expensive as the stores.I liked the color and price, only $59.00. It works fine, although the first one did not hold a charge and had to be replaced. I did not want or need a camera or other extra features. But I am satisfied for the money I spent.

I purchased the Motorola T720 for my husband as a replacement because he damaged his Nokia. I like the flip phone style because it prevents the buttons from being pushed while in your pocket. In addition I like having the display on the front of the phone so that I don't have to open the phone to check the time. Overall I am pleased with this phone.

Phone was worthless. Alltel told me the screen was going and within three days it was gone. Due to a snow storm I didn't get it activated and learn it was no good within the 7 day return policy, so I can't comment on that. Service getting it to me was good, but product was no good.

  Motorola T720 - a pretty decent phone
Review created: 10/05/07(updated 08/03/08)
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've had this phone for several years, and been pretty happy.

I bought an extended battery - the charge lasts lots longer, but it's also about twice as thick (which required a different battery door, which makes the phone not work in the original belt-clip anymore though).

One advantage of this phone is that it does both digital & analog -- but that advantage will be gone when most companies shut down their analog towers after Feb 18, 2008 (http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/analogcellphone.html).

-----

August 2008 Update: I'm still using this phone, and it's still working well.

I decided to buy the phone for two reasons, a.I needed a new phone and this one was less expensive than buyting one from my provider b.the phone seemed to be a good bargain. I was not able to use the phone because my provider still uses a sim card and this phone doesn't take a sim card. If I was able to use the phone I would have still been alittle disappointed because there was so much personal information left on the phone that I would have had to go thru and delete.

I purchased this phone used, and it works fine for all the basics. My hinge is holding up so far, and it holds as good a charge as my previous LG phone did. I miss having speakerphone capabilities and more preset ringtones.

*---* NOT RECOMMENDED / POOR QUALITY / SHORT LIFE *---*
Review created: 01/18/07(updated 04/04/08)
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We first purchased this phone in mid to late 2002, and have had problems with it since day one. We even purchased a second T720 approx 1 year later, hoping that it was just the first phone with issues, with nothing but problems with the second one also. The T720 is very nice in appearance(being very slim/sleek/easy to use/attractive), but the mechanical perspective of it is very poor. This model has been known to have the following problems:

*Poor Speaker/Call Quality
*Short Battery Life
*Poor Reception(regardless of any specific carrier)
*Needing ~Frequent~ Data Uploads
*VERY POOR Charging Capabilities. This type of charging plug/adapter was a Motorola experiment that proved to be very ineffective. This model has many charging problems, even with Brand New units. The ability to charge the phone after months/years of use becomes almost impossible.
*Fragile Parts/Hinges if unit is ever accidentally dropped.

We were impressed when this unit first hit the market, with all of its great features, but soon after purchasing is when all of the issues began.

All of our Cellular Phones purchased since 1989/1990 have been Motorolas, but at this point, we have decided that the Motorola brand will possibly become a brand that we will not consider. Motorola carries a good name and reputation, but after all of our experiences, we feel Cellular Phones/devices just isnt their niche.

Shop around before deciding to buy Motorola. If possible, check with other phone users regarding a particular model, or maybe even check with Forums online to see all the Rants & Raves on a particular Brand or Model.

We rate Motorola CellPhones 2/5, and the Motorola T720 Model 1/5.

Good Luck on your next Cellular Phone purchase!!

The Phone that I purchased is great. As long as it stays plugged in just like the add said. I kinda was hoping it only needed a new battery but that didn't work. Thank you very much for being honest about not being sure it's problem. My guy here is going to use it for parts. Very clean phone. Thank you again.

  Item Defective

The shipping was super fast, and the extras were great. The phone basically is a piece of blahh. I guess the battery isn't a right fit or maybe the sim holder is bent in such a fine way that it doesn't read it. I'll answer and it freezes. I'll be talking and the call drops if I get call waiting. I tried deleting everything on the memory card and that didn't help.
Point of this rambling is they sold be a defective item and now I don't have a phone until december. I know whaaaaa whaaaa. Beware!!!

I knew that this phone wasn't the top of the line, but I was disappointed that the names on the phone list were so tiny. For someone older like me it was very hard to see. Also the graphics on it are outdated. I guess you get what you pay for. It is a decent phone to have around if your other one dies.

The light on the front when the phone is closed blinks constantly ever since I got it. And when I open the phone it takes about two minutes before the screen comes on. The company I bought it from was helpful when I emailed about the problem and they told me to send the phone back for repair. But I haven't. I don't have time for the hassle. I will wait until I renew my service and get a better phone then. The phone sucks. Even $40 was too much to spend in my opinion.
