At first glance, the V3x is a little on the chunky side – 19.8mm thick to be exact. However, users must take note that the Motorola V3x is a 3G handset, which justifies its thicker profile.

Judging the Phone by its Cover

Technically, the V3x is one of the smallest 3G handsets in the market today. This phone, while not ultra-thin like its original V3 predecessors, actually fits fairly comfortably into most pockets. With its soft touch plastic construction, the Motorola V3x gives a fresh and clean appearance, and its added thickness giving it a more substantial look. Closed, the 2.0-megapixel camera can be seen on top with an LED flash that is so bright, it can function as a torchlight when needed. Right below the camera is a small external display with a resolution of 96 x 80 pixels. The external display is very useful, allowing quick checks of the time, date and state icons, provides details on missed events, displays caller's name, and also as a mirror for taking self-portraits.

On the lower part of the phone is a blue horizontal strip that lights up to indicate incoming calls or when the unit is recharging. On the left side of the phone is a mini-USB connector for charging the unit, a smart-key button, and two volume control buttons. The voice control button and the camera release button can be found on the opposite side of the phone. Finally, the speakers can be found at the back of the V3x. The speaker is good, though sound quality did turn out a little bit on the muffled side since the speaker is such that it points away from the user during video calls or video watching.

Open Sesame

Opening the V3x reveals a 2.2-inch QVGA display screen that produces brighter, sharper, and clearer pictures and font outputs than older RAZR models. Motorola has also introduced a few changes to its menu interface and messaging functions to create a refreshing user experience for the V3x. One thing worth mentioning is that the 'select' function is now the left soft key and the 'cancel' function is now on the right, which (finally) feels just like any other mobile phone in the market. Running your fingers along the surface of the keypad will reveal several raised rubber strips that were plated to make text and number input easier for users.

Clearly, as a 3G phone, video calling, music and video downloading, and streamed TV are all supported functions. It also has Bluetooth and a multimedia player supporting AAC+, MPEG4, WMV, WMA, MP3 and Real Video/Audio formats. The onboard camera takes good photos, but the highlight is its ability to switch between landscape and macro modes. This enables users to take good close up shots when the need arises. The video function of the phone supports MPEG4, Real, and 3GPP formats. At the storage end are the onboard memory (62MB) and a microSD (TransFlash) memory slot, which means it'll take a while before you run out of storage options with the V3x.

Final Thoughts

Under normal usage, the V3x could only last two days on a single charge (99 minutes in continuous video talking). However, with an improved interface, large internal memory, a 2.0-megapixel camera capable of taking pictures in landscape and macro modes, 3G functions, and expandable memory, there is much to adore about the Motorola V3x than frowning at its chunky body.

  Razr V3x Review

Wow! what a phone! Blazing speed, great camera, 3G networks (although the U.S. doesn't currently have a major provider with 3G access), and mp4 video? What a combo. But, there are some issues. This is an angelical phone if you know what to do, where to go, and how to do it.

The phone originally is quite nice in its extensive features, but you have to be careful what version you get as they could be lacking features. The version I got was absent of advanced voice dial. So I switched it to the latest manufacturer version. This isn't very hard if you have the resources (I'll get to it later).

The camera is phenomenal and at the top end of the market at two megapixels, 8x zoom, flash usable as a flashlight, and multiple picture modes such as negative and black & white. The video camera on the other hand is quite problematic.

It's factory limited because of the limited space on the phone (although 64 mb is usually near the top end of internal memory), and on some versions changes when you put in a memory card.

The advanced voice recognition, called obeyMoto is quite amazing, and is made for multiple languages. Although, if you get the wrong language, such as german, you probably would want to find another version of the software to install, because it usually doesn't mix well with tongues outside the one programmed in. It even works with blutetooth heasets/phones, albeit with you having to speak louder than normal.

The mp3 programs are quite nice, with one java application that resembles iTunes, and the original, which is the same one in the Razr V3. The original has been updated and allows you to flip the screen closed and play/pause and forward/rewind through the play with quite a nice control system. With bluetooth headphones the sound quality resembles a high end mp3 player. One good set I got off ebay are the motorola ht820's, which work quite nice, and have a great price compared with other bluetooth headsets, and even retail price of $120.

The memory card slot allows you to expand the storage space up to 1 gigabyte. That is an unfathomable amount for a regular phone. You can input a wealth of info and songs. For example, myself I have five 23 minute episodes of dave chappelle, one whole 90 minute movie, a few ten minute clips, about 40 different 30 second clips, about 125 songs, and about 20 full quality pics. I have about 60 megabytes left over. You can get the micro SD 1gb card off ebay for about $40.

The program included with it, motorola phone tools, is phenomenal in ease of use and features. It can convert pics, videos, make custom ringtones, allow you to send messages and connect to the internet via your phone, and organize your contacts, info, and datebook. It usually comes with the phone but, as always, you can get it off ebay.

Now, finally the aftermarket alterations. The modifications that can be done to this phone are quite simple and numerous. Personally, I have unlocked my sound level, increased camera quality, increased video quality, installed multiple skins, changed my software version, and unlocked it. all you have to do is search for "The Moto Guide" on google and you'll get a tutorial composed of many different sources, with included flash video tutorials and explanations of all terms. After you've reinstalled the software there are multiple sites and forums you can go to to get help on further modifications. I prefer motomodders.net and motox.org.

All in all a great phone, and modded even better.

A sexy V3 killer, review of the "3" black V3X
Review created: 07/12/06

What's new in the new V3X over the Razr?

V3 Advantages-

-Quad band
-Lighter, and somewhat thinner (only 6mm less in height) than V3X

V3X Advantages-

* Soft faceplates, which don't scratch easy compared to V3, or absorb as much heat/cold (the metal phones can really heat up, while the V3X stays cuddly)
* 59MB more memory! This baby comes preinstallled with 64MB!
* 2 Megapixel photos, with macro focus adjustment
* Great bright LED flash, which I often use as a flashlight
* A 320 x 240px, 262k TFT screen, to take advantage of the main camera!
* Interior 640x480 camera for 3G video conferencing
* Comes with USB cable, MobilePhoneTools, and Headphones with microphone for calls (pauses music while you have conversation) (package may vary by seller, but this is standard with the "3" version)
* Transflash/MicroSD in case you want to advantage of all the cool features of this phone!
* Windows media friendly! It has the authentic "Designed for windows media" logo on the box.
* Videos can be played "full screen", the menu bar completely dissapears and video is played in landscape mode.
* Great loud sound quality. Improved over the V3. Speakerphone is excellent!
* Voice activated dialing, without the need to "train". The program instantly recognizes your voice and allows you to Name Dial, Digit Dial, Redial, call Voicemail, or open Camera/Recieved Calls with the touch of only one button!
* Video recording up to 10 Minutes at Max Resolution, with sound, regardless of exterior/interior camera (it is 640x480 resolution with both)
* Came with a US charger, which was a big plus for me. I wasn't happy with the euro charger that came with my V635 (had to use a crappy converter plug)
* Great selection of wallpapers and ringtones pre-installed on phone.

Cons-
* Tri-Band

This phone's got it all. The original RAZR was an awsome phone but the new V3X is much more solid and better than the V3 model. It's got a lot of cool features such as 3G technologie, 2 2mp cameras, MP3 player and whole lot more. The price is very reasonable too and the phone is defenitly worth every penny.

  Moto V3X - from a pro
Review created: 10/05/06
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

hello, first off if you have any doubt about what i say you can check my feedback, i buy phones constantly and i feel that i do know quite a bit about phones.

The V3X;

i bought this phone for a few reasons:
1) it was cheap - most on ebay are going for 250 brand new with box, i got mine for i belive 170 new boxed
2) i love the fact that its bigger than a regular razr, i work for a cell phone company and have broken more razrs than i care to mention. the V3X is different, it is a little thicker than a regular v3 or v3i. in my opinion is has a better feel in your hand than a regular razr. since its bigger, it does have a better camera it says 2 mega pixels but the camera only works well if ther object your shooting is close, the zoom isnt the best but i didnt buy the phone for the camera so i dont really care much about that.
3) space - this phone has expandable memory, it comes with a 64mg mini sd card (atleast mine did) i currently have 46 30sec. ringtones that i made and the memory card isnt even full and i havnt touched the phone memory yet, so the memory is great. the phone has video calling which wont work in the us, but the interior camera is cool to take pictures with your friends.

over all this phone performs well, its a 900/1800/1900 gsm phone CINGULAR CUSTOMERS THIS PHONE DOESNT SUPPORT THE 850mgz SIGNAL THAT CINGULAR USES IN SOME AREAS!!! im using it with t-mobile and it works like a dream, great reception and people always ask me abou tthe phone. over all, if you dont care about the camera, this is a great phone for anyone. thanks

this phone is not worth 2 to 300 doll ars when you could get the v3i for so much less! the v3i has everything this does except the 2 way video calling, its a nice feature but how are you going to use it with? how many people do you know who have video calling? What is the big difference between 1.5 megapixcils and 2. if you are a filthy ritch snob than go ahead and get the v3x but there is a dolce and gabana v3i!!

  Motorola RAZR V3x, BEST PHONE!
Review created: 11/10/06
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The best word to describe the Motorola RAZR V3x is AMAZING. It has got to be the best phone I have ever owned. I can honestly say that I love this phone more than my T-Mobile Sidekicks. The first reason being that you can create your own ringtones (with software and data cord). At $1.99 or more for a real MP3 ringtone, it has saved me money that I could be using on other things. In addition to that, the speakerphone function is amazing. It is loud and clear. With other phones, the speakerphone function might as well not exist because they have all been so muffled and crappy that whoever you speak with always asks you to repeat yourself. In addition, this phone has a 2.0 MEGAPIXEL camera. With appropriate lighting, it is almost as good as a digital camera! It also has an internal camera. Although the internal camera is supposed to be used for cellular video calling, which the US has not adopted yet, its purpose is not completely useless. You can now take a picture of yourself without having to flip the camera over multiple times to make sure the picture came out OK. There are not enough words to describe how happy I am with this phone. The screen resolution is great, the features are great, it LOOKS great. Everything about this phone is great. I'm not into smartphones or anything beyond a "cell phone" and this is phone is my favorite thus far.

  Problems
Review created: 10/10/06
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Purchased phone off ebay. Looked cool. The pictures it took looked pretty much amazing and this is coming from a photography student but I thought it had horrible service. It worked really good in Saint Louis and terrible on the highway outside of STL. I am with Cingular and have never had a problem in the areas in which I did. I was so sad to give away the phone. They wouldn't let me return it either! I heard it was only a triband not a quadband and not compatible with all networks but I don't know that forsure.

Excellent phone and it looks razr sharp
Review created: 05/23/07
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After numerous hours pondering which phone to buy, I decided on this phone for many reasons.

Pros:
2.0 Megapixel camera w light/flash source - not many phones even have 2.0MP, let alone a light/flash source
BIG DISPLAY SCREEN - tired of squinting? The display on the inside is one of the biggest you can get on a flip phone
KEYPAD - ALL the other Razrs, including the KRZRs have VERY POOR keypads that feel cheap and flakey. This one has a 1 piece solid feel.
EXTERNAL MEMORY - although the manual states it only supports 512MB of miniSD memory, it in fact recognizes 1GB
RAZR STYLE - You can't go wrong with the aesthetic look of a RAZR. Although slightly thicker, it's still slimmer than most other flip phones and it looks way better than any other manufacturer's RAZR knock off.
KING OF THE RAZRS - if you compare all the RAZRs out there, this one has the most internal memory, supports external memory and has superior screen resolution
CUSTOMIZATION - because it's a RAZR, there's a HUGE modding community out there that allows you to do just about anything you want to this phone. IE. unlock, debrand, update firmware/monster pack, seem edits to improve picture & video quality among other things

CONS:
not QUAD BAND

CONCLUSION
This is the phone to get if you like what you've read so far.

One of the best things about this phone is stero bluetooth. listen to music with stero, no wires. a phone call comes in and it stops the music, takes the call. hang up and back to music. so nice.

I just got he Oakly O-Roker, looks a little geeky. But works great. Especially when riding a bike, jogging, or driving.

  Good phone!
Review created: 11/09/09
by:
swan3983 ( 6 )

I bought this phone after becoming increasingly frustrated with a Nokia 2760 that I got from T-Mobile for free. I've previously owned a RAZR V3, a RIZR Z3, and a RAZR V3xx, and I really like all the Motorola phones I've ever owned. So I bought the Motorola V3x in hopes that I would have a good experience with this phone, as well. I most certainly haven't been disappointed.

I really like the call quality and signal strength, as it gives me the best signal I have ever received on T-Mobile's network. I consistently have 3 to 4 bars in my signal strength, and it rarely ever fall below 2 bars. It's really one of the best phones I've ever owned. I'm not the kind of person that needs the latest iPhone or G1 Android... I want a phone that offers both form and functionality (my friend has an iPhone, and let's face it, the call quality is not so great). The mobile web browser runs faster than on any previous phone I've had, and the colors are bright and crisp with the hi-res screen.

The only gripe I had with the phone is that it's not compatible on any 3G network in the USA since the phone was really only designed for the European market. But that's only a very minor gripe, and the mobile web is fast on this phone anyways, even without using 3G.

Overall, it's a great phone and WELL WORTH THE MONEY considering it doesn't cost very much!

Motorola V3X The Best until the RAZR Ver 2
Review created: 06/05/07
by:

With a decent 2 megapixel camera and the ability to drop in a 2 Gig MicroSD chip, this phone is the best Motorola has to offer until the new RAZR Version 2 comes out in July 2007. I have over 100 music videos, over 100 MP3's and tons of photos on my phone. People are amazed. The keypad is great for bigger hands/fingers, better than on the V3, V3i, etc with the laser etched keypad.
