Motorola ic602 is a tough yet loaded phone

The ic602 by Motorola is a great phone because it is loaded with great featured. The graphic display menus are clear and easy to read. The phone has many features that you would expect to find in a larger phone squeezed into a smaller unit. From built in voice recognition, GPS, JAVA based programs and games, internet browser, Sprint Mail to check any kind or email, gMail, an average yet good camera for work related issues and so on. The battery gets great life sporting over 5 hours of continues talk time.
The phone uses the Sprint CDMA PCS network at 1900 MHz for voice and data services. Data is not EVDO though is a perfect speed for basic web surfing via the build in browser. For the Direct Connect or Walkie Talkie commonly referred to as "Nextel" as many people use the term "just Nextel me" ... this service uses the iDEN towers on 800mhz making this phone a true Hybrid. Since this model has been released Sprint has devised newer phones that use EVDO data for the Direct Connect system though at this time EVDO is not available in all markets making this Hybrid still a great choice if you travel often and expect to use your Direct Connect where traditional Nextel phones work fine.
One downside of this unit is that it does not roam on the 800mhz CDMA band .. likely because that would cause inference with the iDEN radio in it. The phone does however roam on the 1900 MHz CDMA frequency which Verizon and others use on their newer infrastructure. I tested this by putting the phone into Roam only mode and it worked flawlessly.
The unit does not have Blue Tooth but instead a wire jack. I am sure the Blue Tooth was not implemented based on not enough room in the units’ chassis. Not a big deal unless you depend on Blue Tooth in your car otherwise a wired Nextel headset works fine.
There is another great feature called "Direct Talk" in the ic602. Direct Talk will turn you phone into a stand alone digital walkie talkie. If you are ever in an area where there is no coverage .. such as when one may be camping or perhaps on a cruise or during an emergency where cell tower damage occurs you can count on Direct Talk to keep you in touch with fellow Sprint/Nextel units that have "Direct Talk". The range of Direct Talk is about 6 miles depending on terrain.
In regards to messaging this phone includes Voice SMS, MMS / Picture Mail, and regular text SMS. All messaging features work great.
If you are looking for a compact and sturdy phone that meets Military standards for durability ... this is it. I can not give enough praise for this model. Everything from the comfortable innovative physical design to what is packed into it is just amazing.
Remember, support American companies like Motorola and help keep Americas’ economy strong!
