Synopsis This poignant work of women's fiction introduces the Maxwells and the Popes, whose lives are inextricably linked. The women went to college together; their husbands share a law practice, and the two families are next-door neighbors. A bit of good news inspires a spur-of-the-moment adulterous liaison, which itself sets off a freak accident. The tragedy exposes the cracks in the façade of the two families' seemingly perfect lives and irreparably widens them.
