Album Notes Personnel includes: J. Mascis, Kevin Shields, Robert Pollard. Personnel: Kevin Shields (vocals, guitar, percussion); Bob Pollard (vocals). Audio Mixers: Jack Joseph Puig; John Agnello. Recording information: Bob's Place. By the time of MORE LIGHT's release, indie-rock pioneer J. Mascis had already done everything from crafting a gentle, '60s-style pop song for a movie ("Take a Run at the Sun" from GRACE OF MY HEART) to collaborating with misanthropic shock-rocker G. G. Allin (on HATED IN THE NATION). The Dinosaur, Jr. founder does nothing so sneakily subversive as that on this album. Mostly he just turns the guitar up to 11 and blasts out trademark slacker anthems like "Where'd You Go" or "I'm Not Fine," or an occasional change of pace like the rather sweetly pop-flavored, keyboard-driven "Waistin,' " but he certainly sounds like he's having fun in the process.
Editorial Reviews 4 stars out of 5 - ...Mascis is an original and this is a gem. Q (11/01/2000)
...A fresh approach to his trademark blending of powerchords and melodies....[his] enduring love of Neil Young is ever apparent, but the lovely laziness is all his own. Mojo (10/01/2000)
7 out of 10 - ...Coated in blatant '70s AOR rock, casually tossed-away guitar solos and a liberal splash of that trademark guitar fuzz....a timely reminder of his pervading influence... NME (10/07/2000)
...Sound exactly like Dino Jr....Its a formula that can still thrill... - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (10/27/2000)
3.5 stars out of 5 - ...A charmingly out-of-time beast....this could have recorded in 1993 and lost down the back of the sofa... Melody Maker (10/17/2000)
...The best thing [he] has put his name to since Dino Jr.'s classic GREEN MIND....proving that he is still one of the best underrated guitarists in rock... CMJ (09/25/2000)
...More of what made him great - songs with airhead titles...which stretch glorious guitar solos over solid chopping riffs... The Wire (10/01/2000)
