Album Notes Personnel includes: Al Green, Al B. Sure, Lyle Lovett (vocals). Includes liner notes by David Nathan. As the title suggests, this doesn't pretend to be the definitive Al Green collection--that's why God invented the boxed set, or to be more specific, his 1998 ANTHOLOGY. On the other hand, this does turn out be an eclectic and stylistically wide-ranging look at one of pop music's greatest singers. Along with the obvious classics ("Let's Stay Together," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," the often-covered "Take Me to the River"), you also get interesting early stuff ("Back Up Train," the Stax-influenced ballad that kicked off Green's career in 1967) and some lesser-known but highly worthy newer material, including the deservedly Grammy-winning duet version (with a not at all outclassed Lyle Lovett) of "Funny How Time Slips Away," taken from the 1994 RHYTHM, COUNTRY & BLUES album.
