Recorded live at the Monterey International Pop Festival, Monterey, California in 1967.
The Monterey International Pop Festival was a clarion call for the arrival of youth pop culture as a serious art form. Its festival motto "Music, Love and Flowers" eventually morphed into the Summer of Love. Co-organized by noted entertainment mogul Lou Adler and Papa John Phillips, the festival's board of governors included Donovan, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Roger McGuinn, Smokey Robinson, Brian Wilson, Paul Simon and Johnny Rivers. The input of this wide variety of music industry heavyweights resulted in a line-up that drew from a number of vibrant scenes, including San Francisco, Memphis, New York and London.
The list of future legends who had their coming-out party on this momentous weekend captured on this 4-CD box boggles the mind: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Big Brother & The Holding Company (featuring a then-unknown Janis Joplin), Otis Redding, The Who, and The Steve Miller Band are just some of them. Packaged with a gorgeous 94-page booklet packed with killer photos plus comments by participants, organizers and famous attendees, THE MONTEREY INTERNATIONAL POP FESTIVAL captures a vibrant event whose reverberations are still being felt to this day.
