Monster's Ball (DVD, 2002)

If you watch movies purely for mindless entertainment, then this one is not for you - stick to action thrillers. If however you enjoy a good story well told, add this one to your library. I give little stock in that farce, know as the Academy Awards; however I have to agree with them for Halle Berry’s performance (Best Actress). The acting by all is first rate, including Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, and this may be among Billy Bob Thornton’s best ever. The story is not fast paced; instead care is taken to fully develop the characters, each of whom you get to know intensely. The story is not a common one, but one of common people in an extraordinary circumstance. The dialogue is not excessively wordy, so do not leave the room, use the pause button - you don’t want to miss anything in this one.

Lots of disgusting characters in this racy story about two very opposite people coming together out of necessity. Very powerful and ultimately enjoyable. Halle Berry was oscar-worthy in her performance clothed and otherwise.

I thought this movie was okay! I really didn't know whether this movie was a love story or a drama, but if you like Halle Berry then you will love it. She bares all in this movie. It is not very suitable for children. I thought that Heath Ledger was very good in this movie. Parts of this movie are also very disturbing. I found myself thinking about it for days.

Sexually explicit and not recommended for youngsters. I think the cruelty exceeds the sensitivity level the politically correct generation could tolerate. Those of us who survived the civil rights movement of the 60's recall the beligerence and the actual hate-filled momentum via the lingo allowed in this script. I was sickened by the first 20 minutes of this film and gently restored by the unexpected love story that unfolds with each segment and sordid episode. Watching disfunction melt away to function and see some real peace come to two people's lives in the wake of devastation made waiting for the conclusion worthwhile. Bravo to the cast!

I REALLY LIKED THIS MOVIE!! IS SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT! AND YOU JUST WANT TO KEEP WATCHING!! BUT IF YOUR FEELINGS GET EASILY HURT THEN DONT WATCH IT !!!

Okay... my opinion...(and my husband's, sister's, and brother-in-law's)... this movie is AWFUL!!!!! There are just some movies that the Academy and Critic's love that just leave us going "WHY!" and this is definetly one of them. Very SLOW moving and developing. Very drawn out. How Halle Berry got an Academy Award for her role is a HUGE mystery. Very poor acting and incredibly laughable and horrendous "love" scene. It was so unbearable that it was not possible to keep enough interest to watch the entire movie. Stopped it before it ended and took it back to Blockbuster. You can afford to miss this one!

I love this movie because halle berry played her butt off with billy bob thornton. I bought this movie for my mother because she really loves this movie and has always wanted it on dvd

This is a bitter sweet movie with real life adult drama. It is seductive with realistic characters and windows into the human condition. Highly recommended. I give it a A++.

This is a very very good movie. Kinda dark but very very good. At the end, you have to imagine what they're thinking and what will happen next.

I liked this movie because it did not show racial tensions which resulted in a loud display of anger and hate.

The many tensions within the movie were presented in a way that I looked forward to sitting there and waiting to view the outcome of every tension [racial, sexual, moral, love...].

I like Halle Barry - and I had an opportunity to get the DVD.

I bought the DVD "Monster's Ball" because I had already had the DVDonce before and it was stolen. The merchandise was in excellent condition and shipment was timely.

The sound track does not work very well and the main menu does not work at all it took a long time to get it started but the movie did play after we figured out how to start it

loved it when it came out, last night Halle Berry giving out the Best Actress Oscar really got me thinking about when was the last time I saw it, so I jumped on Ebay grabbed it.. and can't wait to sit back and watch, what will be a classic from my generation!

Set in modern Mississippi, MONSTER'S BALL subtly examines the impact of personal loss and the transforming power of human connection. The movie begins in the state penitentiary's death row, where father-and-son prison guards Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Sonny Grotowski (Heath Ledger) administer the execution of a black death-row inmate Lawrence Musgrove (Sean Combs), who leaves behind a wife, Leticia (Halle Berry), and son, Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun). When both Hank and Leticia's children subsequently die, the two grieving parents are accidentally thrust together, where they begin to find comfort and eventually a form of redemption. Employing a languid pace and minimalist dialogue, MONSTER'S BALL slowly moves forward on the strength of the cast's performances (including a supporting turn from Peter Boyle as Hank's ailing racist father, Buck) and Marc Forster's understated direction. The complex characters are allowed to develop gradually over the course of the entire movie, making the film a richly satisfying character study rather than a quick, plot-driven confection.

It was a good movie on the southern battle between old southern styles pitted againest changing times And also a battle between fathers and sons and mothers and sons

Heath Ledger is now only a memory! A legend of hope and being unique. I am collecting all of his works so that my children always remember life is short make the most of it!

Awesome movie, Hally Berry gave it her best. She is extremely into the sceens and will even make you feel good, to bad they used billy bob.. that old bum.

I'm collecting all of Heath Ledger's movies. This was not one of my favorites. But still worth keeping for my collection.
