I just saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I've had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness.
The house is plain old MEAN, and for really small children perhaps a little too scary to take in a gigantic room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment.
The same motion capture technology used to create The Polar Express (a film which I have still yet to see) is a very interesting and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly fantastic element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so monstrous.
Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn't expect there to be much of a story. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I think is a script that I believe is just as worthy of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than horror. A tale of love, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go.
Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Horror movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to answer that age old question: Can a house be haunted?
The answer is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script.

Spielberg does it again with another great movie, this one being a digital animation with a lot of humor. I have seen some other Spielberg movies (Jurassic Park for example) and most of them were action, but Spielberg pulls it off with a great kid (adults with enjoy too) movie about a Monster House in a neighborhood and a group of friends that live in that neighborhood try to save the neighborhood from it around Halloween.
Mr. Nebbercracker lives in the Monster House, a mean-old cook who yells at everyone if they run on his lawn or anyone who comes near the house really. Then he is taken to the hospital, D.J, the boy that lives right acrossed the street from him alone with the mean baby-sitter while this is happening.
D.J's best friend is Chowder, a chubby and funny kid. They watch the creepy house and then suspect it is a monster. Then they see a girl by the name of Jenny selling cookies and walking up the the front door of thr Monster House.
D.J and Chowder save her from being eaten by it and that is when the adventure takes off; they try to save the neighborhood from the Monster House!
A Fun and laugh-out film, this movie deserves the attention of critics. This movie is a wonderful family film and lets its charm off on the audience watching it and when they exit the theatre (this happening to me) people saying, "I really liked it." This is totally worth the watch, not being a rent from Blockbuster or your local library. This movie has amazing graphics, it being high standered. It's like your actually watching a real film with real people in it! This is highly recommended!

This movie is totally fun and a bit scary. It has an original plot--it will keep you guessing and keep you on the edge of your seat! There are a few scary parts--too intense for our three and a half year old. Our eight year old loved it. It has funny characters with great lines. The animation is perfect with such interesting facial expressions. Plus, the movie has awesome effects. The movie is an experience!

This is the most compelling animated movie I have seen in a long time. Computer animation adds realism, but this is a character driven story. I could easily imagine this as a live-action movie--the script was that good.
I was really surprised by how good this movie was. The premise was quite unique. The house isn't haunted; the house itself is alive and H-U-N-G-R-Y. The movie has a nice blend of action, suspense, mild horror and humor. I am sure I will be adding this DVD to my must-watch Halloween favorites.

Saw this film when it first came out and thought it should have been brought out at Halloween as a feature film. The animation is fantastic. The children live across from a house which is very ominous. The house devours their toys and they want them back. So they go searching for the answer to their lost toys and behold they find a love story about the couple who owned the house. But they discover that the Husband has been trying to keep them away from his evil deceased wife who has taken possession of the house. How do they unravel this mystery. How do they release the ghost of the wife and how do they get their things back. Well you have to watch to find out. Oh and their Babysitter is a real witch. Great for kids 10 and up.

This movie is a great movie for the family, although it may really scare some younger kids. In this movie three kids are on a mission to discover why the house across the street seems to be alive. They discover why it is alive, but can they stop it from being so evil.

I wasn't expecting to particularly care for this movie. I thought it was for kids. But it really is enjoyable for all ages. Many of the plots are adult oriented although not sexual in nature so kids of all ages will love it too.
It is a mystery, a comedy, a horror film and a cartoon all in one. These days very few movies can do all that.
Characters were fun and very likeable. It was easy and fun to watch. I would watch it again.
If you are debating about this movie, don't hesitate to give it a try. I bet the kids will want to watch it more than once also.
Great Halloween movie treat for years to come too.

This DVD was fun to watch and held my attention all the way through it. Wonderful colors, and the animation was so real. The characters were great! But the house was to animated and hard to believe. Overall, it was worth my money and time to watch it, and recommend it to others.

This is a well made movie, with excitement, great graphics & a great story line.
BUT, it is definatly not a movie for the youngest children. It is scary & dark.
Even adults might find some characters scary & for kids 9+ they should watch with their parents for guidance throughout the movie as this might result in nightmares. Otherwise a greatly entertaining movie.

This show was hilarious!!! It was suitable to entertain the entire family, old and young.It was unlike a lot of Disney movies that are for kids but yet, they call people names in the movie along with a variety of other things. This was a awesome, clean, fun, entertaining movie,great for family night!!

This is an excellent movie for bigger kids. Some parts can get pretty scarey for younder kids especially if they get scared easily. A lot of funny parts keep the movie going. Great movie for Halloween or slumber parties!

This movie had a good base story to it, BUT the whole "kids going into a haunted house and getting in trouble" theme is just too played out. They need to start coming out with kiddie movies like The Little Mermaid again!

Just finished watching the movie and I loved it. This movie has a very unique plot which I find rare these days. My 8 year old daughter was a little scared but that was soon surpassed by funny parts and the characters. This movie is a definate re-watch and a possible buy. Could not have picked a better time of year to have watched it! Great Halloween flick.

I Bought This Movie Because We Rented it and My 2 Children Loved it and Begged for it. There Was Nothing I Disliked. It is a Fantastic Movie With Lots of Adventure for The Entire Family!! Saw film and had to buy just to study the wonderful characters. Funny and fun and fantastic. Expressions and movements made them lifelike! We watch this more than any of a hundred that we own.

Our daughter was 3 when we took her to see it in the theater and she loved it then so we decided to buy it for her birthday. She asks to watch it everyday! It has a very cute story line and some humerous parts that she doesn't understand yet, but that I caught my husband laughing to. Overall, I'd recommend this movie to all my friends and their children!

This movie is different from any other one I've seen before. I did end up enjoying it though. The animation and graphics were great! It had a really good mix of scary and comedy.
