Not perfect compilation but still excellent

The first greatest hits album from Dire Straits is a much better compilation than the one that followed it ('Sultans of Swing - The Very Best of Dire Straits').
12 songs, all the band's best known tracks, 'Sultans of Swing', 'Romeo & Juliet', 'Tunnel Of Love', 'Private Investigations' and most of the hits from the Brothers In Arms album. A few rarer tracks on here too, including a live version of 'Portobello Belle' and 'Twisting By the Pool' which was not available on album if you never got hold of a copy of the band's 1983 EP. And a live version of the epic 'Telegraph Road' is also included, if not on the LP at least on the CD.
The only real downside to this 'best of' is that 'Money For Nothing' and 'Brothers In Arms' are both edited, unlike the above mentioned tracks, and a remixed version of 'Where Do You Think You're Going?' doesn't sit very comfortably with the other better known tracks. That apart, this is a great CD overall.
This compiliation appeared before Dire Straits' last studio album 'On Every Street' was released, but as that album didn't produce major hits (and was probably their weakest) that doesn't detract greatly.
There are many other Dire Straits songs that are worthy of inclusion on a 'best of' set, but this is a great starting point for the casual fan or for those of you who are not already familiar with the band's back catalogue.
