2 words...Chick Flick
the sad thing is it really wasn't that good of one. Julia Roberts could have done a much better job.

I love this movie. It is a wonderful story about a teacher (Julia Roberts) who tries to help intelligent girls make a decision to have a career or do what their foremothers have done for generations....get married and have children.

I decided to buy this movie because I loved the story line and I thought about it often after I saw it the first time. It has lots of references to art, which I also enjoy.

While this is a very slow moving film it is also a very beautiful one... it is well filmed and well written, a Drama about a teacher at an all girls school and how she teaches a group of girls all about the importance of being themselves and that women too are important in society --- Very heartwarming and a great film!!!

  Balanced portrayal

I am a big fan of this movie. First of all I love period films, and while this movie does make a few big blunders as far as historical accuracy (i.e. the I Love Lucy opening credits etc.), it has the ability to transport you back into time and make you feel a part of the film. As with all other movies with an exhausting list of A-listers I was skeptical, but everyone in this movie is excellent; Kirsten Dunst's portrayal of her character Betty is multi-faceted and poignant. I also really appreciated that this was not just another sappy-sweet happy ending or just another film about women where they are all changed out of their narrow feministic thinking in the end and become lawyers and car mechanics despite everyone else and society. These were real women with real wants and desires, and **SPOILER WARNING** I appreciated the fact Julia Stiles' character chose the traditional way of life, but that she represented it as her choice and in turn taught Julia Robert's a thing or two about being a strong woman able to make her own choices because they are what she wants. Overall this movie is excellent. If you like period films with a strong message that is balanced and presented well with great performances you'll like this film.

I am a fan of all Julia Roberts' movies. This one was good, but the setting and the time span took away from the movie. The story was okay, but she excels in the more romantic type movies and this one really didn't do her justice. Probably will not watch it again.

Great movie!! Julia Roberts exemplifies the reason that she is such a great actress. Obviously she couldn't have done it by herself, but she was every bit the teacher that she portrayed. How does she do that?! The movie stars her as a pationate but inexperienced teacher going into a private (snooty) rich kids school. You imediately dislike most of the studenmt populace, but, Julia charms them as only she can. I'll say it again- Great Movie!!!

This was another excellent Julia Roberts film. There was a brilliant female cast who all played their characters with true life and were quite believeable.
The cinematography was well done, the costumes superb. Overall it was a delightful movie.

Mona Lisa Smile is a very good movie about Women's Freedom on many levels. It's also a catty chatty movie. It moves slow and easy. If you like slow and easy than this movie is for you!

This movie was hard to follow and not Julia Robert's best work. To me this movie certainly did not promote women - it made us look like bimbos who go to college to get a degree only to get married and have babies. I also didn't like the fact that the college board during meetings looked like they were concerned with only their "image" and not their students or what a new professor could bring to their college.   Going back in time!!!
Review created: 05/06/08

These days..young girls entering college have education and careers on their minds...but back in the 50's..women were looking for Mr Right as well as getting a degree..which wouldn't serve them much if they wanted to have a home and family. It shows a women in her senior year of college..who tells the professor...Julia Roberts...that she doesn't have to attend classes in order to pass...and everyone knows that planning a wedding and setting up an apartment is more important than attending art classes. Back then...women were not encouraged to use their minds. Julia Roberts tried to make them see they have minds..and can pursue careers when they graduate..or even go beyond 4 years of college for higher education. It is a great glimpse into the yesteryears which many women remember..and for those who don't have a clue as to what it used to be like...this will give a good idea how far women have come. Watch and enjoy...maybe with a woman who went thru that time period and can attest to what it was like..back then!!!!

Started out good but fell apart in he second half
Review created: 04/30/08

The movie started out good with a message about character in those days. However, the movie lacked direction in the second half. The end was kind of abrupt with no concrete message. It failed to capture the intensity which is required to portray such strong characters in the movie.

Overall, an average movie.

  Decent Film
Review created: 04/23/08

'Mona Lisa Smile' is a well-crafted piece of period cinema, although given the many lectures which Watson delivers on the need to break with tradition and find new modes of expression, it is rather surprising that the film itself has been directed in such a conventional style. What saves it from oblivion is its uniformly oustanding performances

Mona Lisa Smile says it, will see why in viewing.
Review created: 03/05/08

I love the era, perfect depiction of struggle for some women, but incomprehension, of attitude, of the majority. Julia Roberts portrayal as one of the few in minority, trying so hard to put womens choices out there and having them flung back in her face. It was not a womens liberation movie, as much as it was a women are wearing blinders, but refuse to take them off, for what they might see. I would not call this a "chick movie". A beautiful story of women loving themselves, and absolutely nothing to do with women hating men!!! Strong movie!!!!

  Mona Lisa Smile (2004, DVD)
Review created: 10/05/07

I enjoyed the re-depiction of 1950 and 1960 style attire. Fort once the producers actaully went out and did some research and got the correct hairstyles, blouses and ruffle skirts or poodle style skirts with crylins.
Even the penny loafers were close to authentic. The girls actually wore penny loafers with a 1 in ch pull tab at the heel end so they could slip into them and the boys used shoe horns. Overall, very very close visual setting all around.
