Synopsis The Japanes bombing of Pearl Harbor drastically changes the life of 12-year-old Molly Donnelly in this novel set during World War II. First, her best friend, a Japanese girl named Emily Tanka, is forced to move away and live in an internment camp. Then Molly's mother takes a job in order to support the family--a situation that forces Molly to watch over her younger brother and take care of the household. But despite the difficulties brought on by the war, Molly still manages to find some happiness, and even falls in love for the first time.
Twelve-year-old Molly, who lives next door to a Japanese American family and whose cousin is a nurse in the Philippines, experiences many changes in her life when World War II breaks out.
