Super stud Clark Gable plays Victor Marswell, the operator of a safari post near Kenya, who has 2 lovely but different women to choose from in this 1953 drama.
Eloise Kelly (Ava Gardner) arrives first to meet the Maharajah of Bunganore, who had canceled his trip. Eloise is a sultry American woman, who enraptures the whole camp with her quick comebacks and bold flirtatiousness. But she soon tires of Victor who kisses her but is noncommital. When she leaves on a boat back to America, we think that her turn is over.
Enter Mr. and Mrs. Donald Nordley from the same boat that Eloise departs in.
Linda Nordley (Grace Kelly)is a young, demure, vulnerable English noblewoman, and we learn later is not in love with her husband. She is ripe for the plucking when her husband Donald (Donald Sinden) suddenly becomes ill. But Eloise has returned when her boat capsized, and she is aware of Victor's attraction to Linda.
The catfight between the two women continues throughout the movie as the cast goes on a safari to view a band of gorillas, which was Donald's dream. He is the only person unaware of the conflict between the two women and of Victor's bold steps into his marriage. Victor and Linda have several passionate encounters when Eloise tries to warn Linda of Victor's false appeal. But Linda doesn't listen.
How this all resolves itself is for you to view in the movie. It does not disappoint, and you will be on the edge of your seat until the end.
Mogambo, which means passionate in Swahili, had 2 Academy award nominations--Ava Gardner for Best Actress and Grace Kelly for Best Supporting Actress. Neither won. However Grace Kelly did win the Golden Globe for this part.
This movie was a re-make of the 1933 movie "Red Dust," which also starred Clark Gable but with Jean Harlow as Eloise and Mary Astor as Linda.
The technicolor photography is beautiful too. And did I mention it was directed by John Ford whom we are all familiar with as John Wayne's director many times.
You will enjoy this movie very much!
