An average anime movie.

As a huge Gundam fanatic, I had high expectations for Mobile Suit Gundam F91. Perhaps too high. As it stands, F91 is an average anime movie that is certainly worth a rental, but isn't really worth the purchase in the end.
The main problem with the movie is the pacing. It was originally a television series that ran into production problems and was changed into a (roughly) 2 hour movie. Instead of rewriting the script to tell a specific story, they simply condensed the original story. By doing this, everything feels rushed and unfinished.
The next problem with the movie is the abysmal English dubbing. It's truly terrible. Alot of the voices are recognizable (Seabook Arno shares the same voice actor as Shiro Armada from 8th MS Team) but they didn't do a very good job with this movie. Many of the voice actors sounded like they were simply reading the script as fast as possible, not really caring how their voice sounded in the end.
The movie does have its merits, however. The mobile suit designs are spectacular; frankly it's some of the best in the Gundam universe, if not mecha in general. The animation is also good; many Gundam movies have poor animation quality, especially the condensed films. F91's animation isn't bad at all; it isn't great (it's no Akira or Patlabor The Movie, all were released within 4 years of each other) but it isn't bad. It's a definite improvement over Char's Counterattack in terms of animation, but it's a decline in overall story quality from that masterpiece of mecha anime.
If you are a Gundam fanatic, then it could warrant a purchase simply to complete the collection. If you're just a general anime person, then this movie should be rented or borrowed, not bought. Overall an average anime, but it isn't the worst I've ever seen.
