Mizuno MP 33 Irons... The Best Irons of all time

Fantastic looking club that performs very well. Don't be put off by 'I cannot hit blades' with these you can. I swear by them! The Mizuno MP-33 golf irons look great and perform great. Distance is awesome and consistent. Ball flight is of a moderate trajectory. Also these blades really help out every player's game; they act almost like trainers, teaching you to hit the ball perfectly square on the club face. I would recommend these irons to anyone who wants feel of a forged club the looks of a traditional iron, and the workability offered by blades.

These are simply the best irons ever made. You will improve while playing them and the feedback is unmatched. Anything Mizuno is top-notch, and these stand out as their best product ever offered.
It is no accident that their MP-100 anniversary irons are MP-33 Clones!

  Mizuno irons are for 'players'

I've played with many different Mizuno iron sets - what sets them apart from all others, in my opinion, is their playability. These clubs are not for the weekend warrior who plays on a non-regular, non-serious basis. If you're in to golf, willing to practice, and want to elevate your game to the next level, you can't be without the best equipment. Mizuno irons are the best.

  Great Mizunos

This is the only set of Mizunos I've ever played. At first they were difficult to hit, but with hard time on the range these have become my most consistant clubs in my bag. These are great for showing you what you are doing wrong in your swing and where you are striking the ball on the club face. Very workable for the advanced played and very useful for the average played. If you can afford time on the range get these clubs and lower your scores

Mizuno MP 33 Irons--It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This
Review created: 01/24/07(updated 10/26/07)
by:
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I started out with oversized clubs with lots of forgiveness and offset, so I was fearful of blades. They have tiny heads and they offer no forgiveness for off-center hits. However, I truly believed I needed to play with blades to take my game to next level.

In order to make a smooth transition from oversized, cavity-back irons to blades, I decided to try a gradual progression from the Mizuno Comp EZs to the Pro IIs to the MP 33s. The Comp EZs were one of the best cavity-back irons ever forged because they offer lots of feel and forgiveness to the mid to high handicapper.

On the other hand, the Pro IIs were perhaps the worst iron ever made by Mizuno! No joke. Whatever they were attempting to improve about the Pro, news flash--they failed miserably. In fact, the Pro IIs were so lacking in feel and forgiveness that Mizuno should have been required to reimburse every purchaser for their cost plus damages for pain and suffering!

All of that said, the Mizuno MP 33s are beautiful like works of art. Although they offer dime-sized sweet spots and less forgiveness than a fundamentalist, they are tools requiring the skill of consistently good ball-striking. Their finish is shiny, but not very durable. When you strike the ball on the sweet spot, it feels like you have swung through soft butter. It is unmistakably wonderful! I mean you don't have to look up to see the shot to know it's good. The distance and direction are that accurate. When you don't hit the sweet spot, it feels a little like sticking a butter knife into a 120v outlet. It stings and the ball goes one or more clubs short and often off-line. Hey, it's a blade, after all. What do you expect? They glide easily through the toughest lies and you can work the ball like a rib.

When you show up with MP 33s, everyone assumes you bring it. To measure up, you have to go to the range and practice, practice, practice. I came to love going to the range several times a week and I played at least 9 holes every day after work and at least 18 on weekends. If you are NOT practicing and playing to that extent, leave these alone. I went from an 18 to as low as a 7 while I was playing MP 33s. They made me want to practice so that I wouldn't embarass myself.

The Mizuno MP 33s can make you a little self-conscious. Your companions will wonder why you play them if your ball striking is off, or if you are scoring over 90. Mizuno makes other clubs that are more forgiving with excellent feel for weekend players and high handicappers. However, the MP 33s are outstanding, if you have to have blades. They also have excellent resale value, if you are willing to take the abuse of using headcovers. For me, playing with blades was a memorable part of the total golf experience. The MP 33s made me practice, work hard and become a better golfer. The MP 33s announce, "I am a player."

  Don't be intimidated

I bought a set of MP 33's off of Ebay for 175.00. I thought I'd use them to improve my ball striking and frankly I was intimidated by the thought of ever taking blades to the course. But after 1 practice session I have them in my bag. I shoot high 80's or low 90's (to a 15.7 handicap after course rating) and the poorest part of my game has always been irons play from 100+ yards. Now its an area of greater confidence (but still my poorest statistically). These irons feel very soft and the smaller heads promote crisper contact. I haven't had any problems with slicing or hooking. This is the first set that I've been able to hit the long irons well (but you must swing smooth and easy) My distance is about the same maybe a little longer than my Cobra SSi or Callaway x-14's. If you are quiet with your wrists and can hit a straight shot then blades are for you. They are excellent at holding a line and pretty accurate at hitting a reliable distance. I wouldn't look at another set of irons after getting these. Never again will I chase the golden game improvement irons. Buy blades they are very playable even for those of us who aren't low handicappers. The ball flight is high and the landing is very soft. I've improved to 5 green's in regulation average and my misses are greenside not 30 yds short and right.

  Mizuno Mp 33 Blades irons
Review created: 08/13/07(updated 08/13/07)
by:
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have played with the MP 33 irons for about a year now, I played with the comp ez and the ping I2 Becu cavity back irons. The mp 33 blades are much easier to hit that you might think. I bought them on e-bay for $250 with shipping and figure that I had nothing to lose if I could not hit them because I got them for a good price. The first time I went to the driving range I was impressed with how easy they were to hit and have been playing them ever since.

I play once a week and sometime two times for about 22 years. I am about a 6 handicap golfer and play in the high 70's to low 80's but I did have a week a couple of month ago when I hit 2 over on Monday and 3 under on Thursday, but I have to confess, I shot 10 over on Friday.

I do love the way they look in my bag and will confess that the impression that they give when you walk up to the first tee is that you are a serious golfer with baldes in your bag is a natural high to me, I will confess that.

They are not that difficult to hit and are wonderful and feel soft when hit well. I play pro-V1 balls which feel soft when struck with the mp33 and enjoy the feel of a well hit ball.

  Like buttah.....

The next person that claims these irons "feel like butter/buttah etc..."
will actually receive an electrical shock from eBay sent via there internet connection. Go ahead, try it. ;)

Mp33 clubs rock, if you have a repeatable swing or you actually WANT to hit them. These clubs are hard to hit if:
1: You do not practice
2: If you suck, and your not willing to take a lesson (a $150 lesson series will probably save you 5+ strokes almost immediately)
3: You live in Wisconsin and its like 35 below zero most of the winter..

Hard to Find New and Regular
Review created: 05/31/08

3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Remember when the Beatles stopped making music together? For years, it was great fun and then suddenly it stopped. Having a set of MP-33s by Mizuno is like that. Sure, John and Paul and George and sometimes Ringo made some good music after the break-up, but it wasn't the same.

First of all, the MP-33s has a thin line on top at address. Some, like the Callaways, have a thick line on top and all that junk in the back. I love the way a thin club sets up to a ball at address.

Second, the feel of the MP-33 is effortless. Struck on the sweet spot, it goes where you want it go, and does what you want it to do. I enjoy the feedback because right away I know when I have hit it pure and when I have hit the ball off-center.

Third, the MP-33 helped me become a better player. I went from a 14-handicap to a 9-handicap quickly after ditching my "game-improvement" clubs for a barely-used set of MP-33s. I advise anyone who is struggling to break through into single digits with game-improvement clubs to experiment with a set of blades. And get them bent to fit your swing.

Unfortunately, I hate the fact that I can't get a new set anywhere. Sure, the MP Anniversary Edition is supposed to be the same club, but I don't have the thousand bucks it takes to purchase. Even rarer is the used set that has regular flex on the shaft. I just picked up a used set for about $200, but the short irons are about as worn as the set I'm using now.

So I keep flipping through eBay every now and then, the same way I flip through old record stores looking for that clean copy of Abbey Road, to see who might be selling a good used set of 33s.

  Mizuno Iron Set
Review created: 09/13/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the iron set for my high school aged son who is crazy about golf. He is ecstatic about the set. He has spent most of the day today, and I'm sure tomorrow "breaking them in". They were a used set, but he was very excited because "they are so well made".

I'm sure that I'll only see him now for laundry and dinner! Thanks for the great transaction and for the excitement of my son.

Great Clubs, major improvement in my game, high handi
Review created: 09/08/08

2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Alot of reviewers may tell you these sticks are for low handicapers. I actually take the side of those who say these can be used as game improvement clubs. There is a bit of an oversize face when compared to most traditional blades. The muscleback provides sufficient forgiveness and a great sweetspot.

The first day on the range with these I hit a bucket of balls on the range, every shot was crap except one ball right on the sweet spot. When you hit these clubs well, which you will start to do if you put in your time, it feels like butter, you cannot feel the impact at all really and the ball just flys. Its a beautiful thing..

There is also just something nice about having these in your bag. They set up nicely and are so clean looking. For me, these clubs were better than any $900 set of irons you can buy new at roger dunn. They forced me to digg deep and fix my swing (over swinging, swaying, not setting up correctly). I hit almost everyball pure when practicing on the range and then just work on distance and the flight. I hit these just as long if not longer than a brand new set of r'7 reg flex irons i had for 6mo. prior to getting these. (these are stiff and I feel like the head is always right there with me, the reg flex felt flimsy)

When you shoot PB's with these sticks and not taking a mulligans or any BS, you command respect from your peers and yourself. It is a no non-sense way to truely get down your golf swing. Get some mp33's, hit the range and chipping green as often as possible, and do work.

Some background: 5'11" 200lbs, used to hit r7 reg flex, played golf for a year with r7's shooting inbtwn bogey-double bogey golf. Now am shooting mid-high 80's.

Easily the best blade on the market. Mizuno blades are benchmark quality and are often copied by most other companies. Great feel with exceptional playability. Great transition club for cavity back players to make to increase ball striking effectiveness.

These sticks are great for the pro and novice, alike. For the pro, shot crafting is a breeze, distance control is uncanny and the feel is second to none. For the novice, although initially more difficult to hit than a cavity back iron, these clubs will expose your faults quickly and force you to correct them, ultimately improving your game. Youll never play with a cavity back again.

These are exactly what the picture is. Mizuno blades. Great soft feel. The high irons are butter. The low irons are more difficult to hit consistant. Some wear on the groove on the face of the club. But, what do you expect from older clubs that have been played a bunch. Classic set of blades.

  Mizuno MP 33 irons
Review created: 09/03/09
by:

Best irons that I've ever played. I'm a low handicapper and play a draw. Excellent feel. Had problems with the chrome work on earlier irons but seems to have corrected the problem. Adjustable because they are forged. Come with tip tapered shafts but hosels can be adapted using a reamer tool to accomodate parallel tip shafts and graphite shafts. Always come with high quality shafts and offer custom fitting with new sets but do a really lousy job at the custom fitting dept. Ordered 5 new sets from Mizuno with custom adjustments and they don't ever get it right. Still overall this is the finest club widely availabe in the U.S. I still play the MP 33s after trying the MP 57 and MP 62 irons. Respectfully, Ed Scharff
